A Wisconsin man is facing serious charges for allegedly igniting a fire in proximity to a congressman’s office, with his actions reportedly linked to the temporary ban of TikTok in the United States.
On January 19, the highly anticipated TikTok ban was implemented, only to be swiftly overturned the same day. Hours later, TikTok was reinstated, courtesy of assurances from then soon-to-be 47th US President Donald Trump, who confirmed that the platform “will face no penalties” within the country.
This short cessation led to widespread unrest in the social media community, leaving creators anxious about their future. Even a popular Marvel video game reportedly suffered collateral damage during this turbulent time.
In a remarkable instance of panic, one individual has been accused of committing arson as a reaction to the brief TikTok shutdown.

Arson Incident Tied to TikTok’s Brief Ban in the US
Emergency services were alerted in the early morning hours of January 19, leading the Fond du Lac city Police Officers to arrive promptly at the scene. They encountered a strip mall ablaze and worked swiftly to contain the flames using nearby fire extinguishers.
Local authorities successfully managed the fire until firefighters arrived shortly thereafter, extinguishing it completely. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and the only collateral damage occurred at the office of Republican Representative Glenn Grothman, whose office was affected by the fire.
Curiously, Grothman had been instrumental in passing the legislation that enacted the TikTok ban in the U.S. After his apprehension, the 19-year-old suspect revealed that the congressional actions against TikTok motivated his criminal behavior.

Police Chief Aaron Goldstein expressed relief that no injuries occurred and that the office was vacant during the incident. He stated in a statement to CBS, “Acts of violence in any form are not tolerated, and we remain dedicated to safeguarding the safety and well-being of our community.”
Punishments associated with arson in Wisconsin can be severe, ranging up to 40 years in prison and fines reaching $100,000, depending on the extent of the damage caused.
