Players will soon have the opportunity to explore Feudal Japan in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, a long-anticipated setting that has intrigued fans since the inception of the franchise. This richly detailed world not only provides a captivating backdrop for the game but also introduces innovative gameplay elements that differentiate it from earlier titles.
In an exclusive conversation with Luc Plante, the Level Design Director at Ubisoft, he elaborated on how this distinctive environment presents both challenges and exciting opportunities for reimagining the gameplay mechanics that players have come to love.
Redefining the Assassin’s Creed Experience

The portrayal of Feudal Japan marks a departure from the familiar urban landscapes of previous Assassin’s Creed installments. Instead of the towering structures found in places like Egypt or Rome, players will experience a landscape dotted with predominantly low-rise buildings, fundamentally altering gameplay dynamics.
According to Plante, “The setting is really unique and the architecture is unique as well. While in some areas of Europe we have tall buildings and can enjoy verticality in terms of parkour, most towns in Feudal Japan feature one or two-story buildings.”This transition in architecture will enhance how players navigate the world, pushing them to adapt their playstyle.
Innovative Gameplay Mechanics Born from a Unique Environment

One of the most fascinating aspects of Shadows is its emphasis on environmental interaction, particularly through the presence of paper walls. “There are a lot of paper walls, so that was a constraint that we transformed into opportunities. If you start a confrontation inside a location, you need to be cautious not to destroy all the walls, as enemies outside will see you,”explained Plante.
This new gameplay feature adds a layer of complexity to stealth mechanics, a hallmark of the series. The ability to inadvertently reveal your location simply by interacting with a door or wall embodies the fresh, dynamic gameplay that the development team aimed for in Shadows.

Additionally, the return of Eagle Vision enhances navigation through these intricate environments. Players will need to be more strategic than ever, as opening a sliding door at the most inopportune moment could easily compromise their stealthy approach.
Plante reflects on these developments, stating, “While this constraint could have posed challenges, it ultimately became a fantastic new opportunity that we hadn’t encountered in any other setting.”This perspective captures the essence of what makes the Assassin’s Creed franchise continuously engaging.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set to launch on March 20, 2025, promising an immersive experience that not only honors the rich history of Feudal Japan but also revolutionizes gameplay in captivating ways.
