NVIDIA has announced its groundbreaking DLSS 5 update, claiming it marks the most transformative advancement in graphics technology since the introduction of ray tracing in 2018. However, reactions to this new feature have generated significant controversy, mainly focused on its reliance on AI-enhanced visuals.
Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) is an AI-driven rendering technology that NVIDIA has been developing since 2019. The success of DLSS has influenced other companies, such as Sony, which adopted a similar solution with its PSSR tool for the PlayStation 5. With the unveiling of DLSS 5, NVIDIA promises a noteworthy leap in visual fidelity, further pushing the boundaries of game graphics.
An Overview of NVIDIA’s DLSS 5
Expected to be launched this fall, DLSS 5 is described as a revolutionary advancement intended to enhance visual quality in video games dramatically. Previous versions of DLSS utilized AI to generate and enhance frames, contributing to a smoother and more polished image. DLSS 5, however, is set to do much more by transforming pixel rendering to offer photorealistic lighting and materials, effectively narrowing the divide between computer-generated imagery and reality.

According to NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, the arrival of DLSS 5 will redefine computer graphics, calling it the “GPT moment for graphics”as it merges traditional rendering techniques with advancements in generative AI. With this technology, early demonstrations reveal that character models can appear strikingly more realistic after undergoing the AI transformation.
Games like *Resident Evil Requiem*, *Hogwarts Legacy*, *Starfield*, and *EA FC* have already showcased the potential of DLSS 5. For instance, NPCs in *Starfield* transitioned from simple video game representations to lifelike interpretations thanks to this enhanced technology. Bethesda’s Todd Howard shared enthusiasm about the improvements, noting how DLSS 5 has invigorated the gaming experience.

The Backlash Against DLSS 5
Despite assurances from Huang that game developers will retain control over aspects such as intensity, color grading, and masking, allowing for personalized application of DLSS 5, gamers have expressed skepticism and criticism. Within hours of the announcement, the associated video amassed over 15 million views on social media, with a predominant focus on negative feedback.

Critics argue that the implementation of DLSS 5 could undermine the artistic integrity of video games by altering designed character models significantly. YouTube personality Suzi Hunter denounced the technology, claiming it distorts the original artistry in favor of overly polished and artificial aesthetics.
Others echoed her sentiments, with one comment summarizing the discontent: “Get this slop filter out of our games.” Further ridicule was even observed from the official *Among Us* account, which humorously joined the conversation about DLSS 5.
