Baldur’s Gate 3 Honor Mode Gameplay Tips: How Excess Wealth Can Sabotage Your Run

One Baldur’s Gate 3 player was taken aback after a particular encounter highlighted the risks of being a loot goblin during their Honor Mode run.

Engaging in Baldur’s Gate 3’s Honor Mode is not suited for players who lack patience. Significant preparation is essential to prevent unfortunate mishaps that could end your run. Over the past year, many players have shared their own Honor Mode horror stories, often stemming from seemingly negligible decisions.

This time, however, instead of encountering mishaps like jumping too forcefully or tumbling off ledges, one Reddit user revealed in a discussion that they came close to losing their run due to the accumulation of gold they were carrying.

Players who have been in the game since launch may recognize Gerringothe Thorm, a boss encountered in Act 2. This specific boss has an ability called Jealous Avarice, which causes her damage to scale with the amount of gold in your possession.

It’s advisable to send your gold to camp before facing Gerringothe in Baldur’s Gate 3.

So, it was quite a shock for the user to receive 1,194 damage in a single blow—thanks to carrying almost 12,000 gold. “My Tav was NOT OK after that attack,” they recounted.

“I nearly had a heart attack seeing that number during my Honor Mode run. I managed to defeat her in the end because she was vulnerable to my ‘Push her out of the Window’-spell, but that damage was insane.”

“The consequences of being a loot goblin are infrequent but can be quite severe when they do occur,” another Baldur’s Gate 3 player responded to the story.

Meanwhile, another player shared a similar experience, “I just faced that fight. My wife asked me something right before it started. When I turned back to the screen, my main character, who had about 125 HP, was already dead.”

Many players suggested entirely avoiding the fight by persuading Gerringothe to end her own life, though this approach would lead to missing out on one of the game’s more entertaining confrontations. In Honor Mode, players might find themselves at the mercy of luck with dice rolls and may have to go through the fight unless they’re prepared to exploit save scumming mechanics.

Once Gerringothe is defeated, players can acquire the Twist of Fortune weapon, enabling reverse pickpocketing of foes before taking them down in one hit. This tactic has been a popular strategy among players—just ensure you have ample gold at your disposal to make it effective.
