The performer who portrayed Lae’zel in Baldur’s Gate 3 has disclosed the peculiar method used to film a particular iconic scene involving Shadowheart.
The actors in Baldur’s Gate 3 were not only responsible for providing voices for all the characters, but they also performed extensive motion capture for their scenes. This was a significant undertaking, given the vast amount of content featured in the game.
“According to Wilde, this scene was one of the earliest ones we recorded. Although I don’t recall the details, I do remember straddling pillows to represent Shadowheart. So, that’s what happened.”
Although specific details are not provided, it is probable that Wilde is alluding to a scene that is unique to the Origin run of Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3. In other routes, Lae’zel and Shadowheart engage in a fight and ultimately agree to a duel. However, Shadowheart gains the advantage and surprises Lae’zel with an ambush during the night.
As Shadowheart, the scene plays out differently. Lae’zel is the one who attempts to slit Shadowheart’s throat while she sleeps, resulting in the aforementioned straddling. However, like in previous playthroughs, the conflict can be resolved peacefully and the group can continue their journey as before.
Using objects as substitutes for actors during filming is a common practice, particularly for productions that heavily rely on special effects. Emilia Clarke, for instance, had to skillfully handle various peculiar green puppets and contraptions while engaging with dragons on the set of Game of Thrones.
When it comes to video games, it can be simple to categorize individuals, which is why a portion of bedding was used to film part of the intense battle between Lae’zel and Shadowheart.
