Baldur’s Gate 3 mod will add a race beloved by D&D fans

A Baldur’s Gate 3 modder is set to add an animal breed mod beloved by Dungeons & Dragons 5e fans to the game, and the current 3D models look incredible.

Baldur’s Gate 3 continues to receive support through patches and hotfixes, but fans are wondering when it will receive a major expansion of DLC content, as there are so many opportunities to add new classes, races, and spells.

Although adding new classes would be difficult, playable races should be easier. In fact, they don’t have as much influence on the way you play. The difficulty comes from their modeling, especially for the more animalistic ones, because D&D races tend to have fantastical appearances.

Players wanting to play as an animal race in Baldur’s Gate 3 are currently limited to the lizard-like Drakeid. However, that’s about to change, as one modder wants to bring some feline ferocity to the Forgotten Realms.

A Tabaxi mod for Baldur’s Gate 3 is in development

Reddit user cobalt_owl has shared his progress on a mod that will bring the Tabaxi to the game. Tabaxi are feline humanoids from D&D 5 with a natural affinity for climbing. They can move quickly and strike enemies with their claws.

The mod is currently scheduled for an April launch, but a beta version is available on CobaltOwl’s Patreon, with the male Tabaxi model currently available for testing. Although the Tabaxi currently only have fall resistance as a passive buff, the model looks amazing.

“Finally! Now I can fulfill my dream of making a Tabaxi monk who pushes his enemies into the void,” one user wrote. Another said: “Looks awesome! I played a Tabaxi in a D&D session, it was a lot of fun. I will definitely download it once you release it.”

“I congratulate you, sir. You dared to make a race mod that wasn’t another clone of Aasimar, Cambion, or Elf. You have all my deepest respect and gratitude,” one user added. Finally, another suggested: “All dialogue options should have cat puns.”

There are many mods for Baldur’s Gate 3 that add races, but few go to this level of detail to create something entirely new. Many race mods use existing races as a base. However, the Tabaxi had to introduce all kinds of new aesthetic elements to achieve the cat style.

Hopefully, Baldur’s Gate 3 will add more classes and races in a future update. It’s unclear if this is the direction Larian wants to take. Any future updates could simply be a new story expansion that increases the level cap. So, it might be up to fans to bring races like the Tabaxi into the game, but modders like CobaltOwl have proven that they are more than capable of taking on the challenge.
