Baldur’s Gate 3 players explain why blowing up this NPC is the morally good option

Baldur’s Gate 3 players have confessed that they would rather see this specific NPC get blown up instead of saving them, arguing that it aligns with their moral code.

While traversing the Underdark in Baldur’s Gate 3, you will encounter a dwarf named Derryth Bonecloak who is on a search for her husband, Baelen, who has gone missing. As you continue to explore the depths of the Underdark, it becomes apparent that Baelen’s situation is far more dire than just his disappearance.

The mushroom picker had accidentally become stuck alone, encircled by hazardous explosive mushrooms with very few escape options. Any misstep could result in a catastrophic explosion, making it your party’s responsibility to rescue him.

When playing as a good character, your natural instinct would be to help Baelen out of his predicament. However, in a Reddit thread poking fun at the situation, players admitted that they would rather let Baelen suffer a cruel fate than rescue him for the sake of his wife.

Baelen Bonecloak in Baldur’s Gate 3 turns out to be abusive to his wife.

“According to one user’s comment, I discovered that by blowing him up, Derryth would be rid of her abusive husband and gain an adorable cat with my help. BIBBERBANG.”

To those who are not familiar with the game, releasing Baelen may seem like a morally questionable decision. This is due to the fact that when you initially encounter him, Baelen appears disoriented and suffering from memory loss. However, further investigation in Act 3 uncovers that he has a history of being an abusive husband and a frequent drinker.

As a result, players are making a concerted effort to prevent the dwarf from seeing daylight. In fact, one user playfully described the situation by stating: “Baelen: Help me…!!! Tav: Alright. IGNIS!”

In addition, a different user brought up the following: “‘Hey, BIBBERBANG, be careful!’ I quickly grabbed the Noblestalk to prevent it from being blown away and used it to feed Shadowheart.”

One person chimed in, saying that they had saved him the first time, but then discovered that he was an abusive individual and had even considered murdering him. During their next playthrough, they chose to let him die.

Ultimately, the decision to rescue him and give him the Noblestalk lies with the player. However, if you are pursuing a romance with Shadowheart, it may be beneficial to give her the Noblestalk as it will aid in restoring her memories.
