A recent report indicates that the development teams at Raven Software and Activision are planning to scale back on crossover skins in response to fan criticism about the visual direction of Warzone.
Traditionally, the Call of Duty franchise has maintained a gritty and realistic aesthetic, featuring playable characters designed as authentic soldiers within a war setting. However, since the introduction of Warzone, the game’s character design has evolved significantly.
Operators are now often colorful, with eclectic themes, and notable crossovers with major franchises have become commonplace. For instance, Black Ops 6 has introduced collaborations with iconic entities like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Terminator.
While this fresh wave of vibrant cosmetics has attracted some players, a considerable segment of the community longs for the old-school realism that characterized the franchise.
Potential Changes Ahead for Call of Duty Customization
On April 8, reliable industry leaker ‘TheGhostofHope’ shared insights regarding how Activision and Raven Software are responding to the renewed player interest since Verdansk’s return in Season 3. The report highlighted that the latest updates have surpassed expectations, along with remarks on the future of crossover designs.
In the leaker’s statement on X, they noted, “They are talking about showing more restraint with Warzone for skins/bundles/microtransactions. Crossovers are ‘printing money, ’ but they hear the criticism that the game is starting to look silly.”

In a follow-up response, the leaker clarified that while crossovers will not be entirely eliminated, future collaborations may receive more scrutiny to ensure they align better with the Call of Duty universe.
“I think they’ll just be more picky with them so they actually fit as a crossover and not that they’ll completely get rid of them, ” they elaborated.
This decision is likely to be met with enthusiasm by Warzone fans who feel that the increasing number of colorful characters has compromised the game’s realistic ambiance. There is a prevailing sentiment among some community members that the developers have drawn excessive inspiration from Fortnite’s aesthetic success.
As Season 3 has already introduced Operators based on Jay and Silent Bob, along with an array of quirky skins, it remains to be seen how these adjustments will manifest in future updates. Nonetheless, players can anticipate a more balanced approach to character crossover design moving forward.
