As you embark on your first quest in Avowed and venture through the Northreach Fort, you’ll soon encounter a crucial decision regarding abilities that will shape your gameplay. Of the initial talents available for selection, one ability stands out as significantly superior to the others.

When you reach your first level-up, you will be presented with three abilities to choose from, regardless of your character’s background. This choice is a pivotal moment and can influence your experience moving forward.

Which Ability in Avowed Should You Select First?

Among the options of Charge, Tanglefoot, and Minor Missiles, Tanglefoot is undoubtedly the most advantageous ability to start with in Avowed.

While all three abilities can be unlocked as you progress further, Tanglefoot offers a strategic advantage during the upcoming boss clash with Steadman Ralke through its capacity to immobilize foes. This capability proves essential in challenging encounters.

The Tanglefoot ability roots targeted enemies using vines, restraining them for a duration of eight seconds. In a game filled with adversaries that prefer close combat, maintaining distance becomes imperative. Tanglefoot allows you to effectively pick off these close-range attackers with ranged assaults.

Tactically, I suggest equipping a combination of a wand and a grimoire at this point in the game. Both items can be acquired early in your mission. The wand facilitates rapid spell casting, while the grimoire offers versatile ice and fire spells, allowing you to inflict damage even as Tanglefoot maintains control over Steadman Ralke.

Are Charge & Minor Missiles Still Worthwhile?

Though not as favorable as Tanglefoot, the other two abilities—Charge and Minor Missiles—have their merits and can prove effective in specific scenarios.

For instance, Minor Missiles unleash three magical homing projectiles perfect for crowd control, while Charge enables you to swiftly close distances, knocking back enemies, disrupting their action, and breaking through blocks.

However, these abilities may not be ideally suited for the imminent showdown with Steadman Ralke. The confined environment where this battle takes place limits the effectiveness of both Charge and Minor Missiles. Ralke, known for his swift, powerful attacks, will quickly reduce any attempts at repositioning or ranged fire into futile gestures.

Utilizing Tanglefoot affords you not only a momentary advantage by immobilizing Ralke but also crucial breathing room to navigate this challenging first battle with greater ease.

Now that you’re informed about the optimal ability to unlock first in Avowed, reflect on your choices and consider the ramifications of deciding to either free Ilora or leave her imprisoned. Your journey awaits!
