Matt Scronce, the design director at Treyarch, has recently clarified various concerns raised by the community regarding the map sizes in the upcoming Black Ops 7. As excitement builds towards the game’s launch, players are eager to discover how these maps will shape their gameplay experience.
The anticipation for Black Ops 7 is palpable, especially with the beta weekend scheduled for October 2. This event marks the first opportunity for players to engage with the new features and gameplay mechanics of the latest installment in the Call of Duty franchise.
At launch, players can expect a total of 16 maps for 6v6 gameplay, including three fan-favorite remakes: Hijacked, Express, and Raid. Notably, some community members have expressed curiosity regarding the absence of mentions for Strike maps, the smaller map variants that some players adore, while others have mixed feelings about their inclusion.
Inclusion of Smaller Maps and Modes in Black Ops 7
YouTuber ThexclusiveAce brought attention to this potential gap, speculating that if Strike maps are excluded, modes like Faceoff and Gunfight might also be absent at launch. However, Matt Scronce has addressed these concerns directly.
In response, Scronce revealed that out of the initial 16 6v6 maps, four will be designed specifically for smaller-scale gameplay that supports both Faceoff and Gunfight modes, with plans for additional maps post-launch. He stated on X (formerly Twitter),
@TheXclusiveAce Saw your latest video on Face Off and Gunfight maps. Out of the 16 6v6 launch maps, 4 of those are smaller and support those modes, with new (+ some former faves) maps coming in post-launch. A change we’ve made for BO7 is to try and make sure those smaller maps…

Moreover, Scronce elaborated that not every smaller map will be playable in all game modes. He explained, “Not necessarily all of them will be included, but we aim to support as many as possible, particularly in relation to aerial access for Scorestreaks. Flexibility is key; we prioritize creativity if the team has a great idea that might not fit into the Scorestreak framework.”
Not necessarily all of them, but the goal is that more CAN be supported which mainly comes down to aerial access for Scorestreaks. We don’t want to force it either way if the team has a cool idea that can’t support Scorestreaks.

In addition to these gameplay features, the community has also raised requests for a “blacklist” option, allowing players to exclude maps they wish to avoid in specific game modes. However, implementing such a feature could complicate matchmaking processes, making it more challenging to populate games efficiently.
As Black Ops 7 approaches, both the developers and the community are keenly engaged in discussing the innovative features and options that will enhance player experience. Stay tuned as more information becomes available.
