In the ongoing debate surrounding Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, streamers are raising concerns that skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) may be placing them in increasingly competitive lobbies, contrary to the assurances provided by Treyarch. Despite the developers confirming that SBMM settings remain dialed back, players continue to express frustration over their matchmaking experiences.
Understanding Current Matchmaking Mechanisms
Skill-based matchmaking has been a contentious issue within the Call of Duty community for years. During the Black Ops 7 beta, Treyarch implemented an Open Matchmaking system designed to broaden the range of player skills in matches. This system was carried over into the full game, supposedly minimizing the emphasis on individual skill when creating lobbies.
On November 16, Treyarch reiterated their commitment to this approach via an update on social media. The developers clarified, “All of our Open Playlists use Open Matchmaking and Persistent Lobbies, and we remain committed to that approach. Quick Play employs the same Open Matchmaking, where skill is minimally involved.”
We’ve been keeping an eye on Multiplayer matchmaking conversations and want to assure everyone of a few things:➡️ All of our Open Playlists use Open Matchmaking and Persistent Lobbies and we remain committed to that approach.➡️ Quick Play uses the same Open Matchmaking, where…

Despite these assertions, many streamers contend that they are still facing challenging matches and have taken to various platforms to articulate their dissatisfaction.
Streamers Voice Their Frustrations
Former Call of Duty professional Colt “Havok” McLendon expressed his frustration by claiming, “SBMM is hitting HARD today.” Similarly, Swagg echoed these sentiments, suggesting that his experiences felt akin to “leveling up against Shotzy and Scump, ” two high-profile players.
JoeWo, another prominent streamer, shared his disbelief at the SBMM situation by stating, “MINIMAL SBMM MY JOHNSON. I’m not playing the same game as some people.” This strong reaction underlines the feelings of disparity many players have experienced.

TheTacticalBrit added to the conversation, asserting that adjustments might have been made since the beta testing phase. He remarked, “SBMM does exist in BO7, and it isn’t the same as the beta. They’ve almost certainly moved the goal posts on either what minimally considered means or who is considered protected in the protected brackets.”
The Ongoing Debate
Although Treyarch maintains that the Open Matchmaking system is firmly in place across several game modes, including Quick Play, the authenticity of these claims remains in question. They have acknowledged that the combination of Quick Play and Persistent Lobbies introduces new dynamics, stating, “unique interactions” will be monitored throughout the year to assess player experiences.
This ongoing dialogue around SBMM reflects the complexities of matchmaking in competitive gaming, as developers strive to balance the player experience while ensuring fairness. As the gaming community continues to voice its opinions, it will be interesting to see how Treyarch responds to the feedback.
