BLACKPINK member Lisa’s solo comeback underperforms in international charts

On the morning of the 28th (Korean time), Lisa’s new single “ROCKSTAR”was released on music platforms worldwide. This marks her first solo release in three years, following her 2021 single “LALISA,”and it is also her first release under her own label, LLOUD Co.

Lisa’s talent for rapping and energetic pop vocals are on full display in “ROCKSTAR”. The track includes contributions from Ryan Tedder, a member of the popular American pop rock band OneRepublic, and producer Sam Homaee. Additionally, Lisa played a key role in writing and composing the song, further elevating its overall quality.

Lisa generated high anticipation for her latest song by revealing concept photos that featured a daring visual aesthetic, including goggles, chains, tooth gems, a wolf cut hairstyle, and tanned skin.

The music video, shot in Bangkok, Thailand, highlights Lisa’s Thai heritage by showcasing scenes of everyday life and cultural elements from Thailand. Additionally, Lisa’s captivating choreography takes center stage as she dominates the city in the video.

Despite receiving mixed reactions, Lisa’s song and music video sparked a lot of discussion. While some praised her impressive rapping skills and commanding presence, stating that she has evolved into a global pop star beyond her K-pop idol status, others expressed their love for her as a member of BLACKPINK and felt that her solo image was slightly out of place.

Despite its success in reaching 8th place on Spotify’s Daily Top Songs Global chart on its release day and topping the Thai chart, the chart performance of “ROCKSTAR”was somewhat disappointing as it ranked lower in Korea, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia at 29th, 14th, 14th, 10th, 9th, and 79th respectively.

Despite reaching the top position in Thailand on the iTunes Top Songs chart, the single did not make it to the Top 100 on Korea’s Melon chart. This is in stark contrast to her previous single “LALISA,”which debuted at number one on the iTunes Top Songs chart in 72 countries, making the current results seem underwhelming in comparison.

Although “MONEY”initially did not perform well on major charts worldwide, there is potential for a comeback as it experienced an unexpected resurgence a month after its release.

Lisa’s highly anticipated future activities as a solo artist on a global scale come after her appearance in the third season of HBO’s original series “The White Lotus”and the release of her solo single.
