Borderlands 4 has made a grand entrance, breaking its own series records on Steam within mere hours of its launch. This fourth iteration of the beloved franchise achieved an unprecedented milestone with a peak of 207, 479 concurrent players on its debut day, a staggering increase that more than doubles the previous record held by Borderlands 3—approximately 94, 000 players at launch. This outstanding performance has positioned Borderlands 4 far ahead of its predecessors.
Thanks to this remarkable uptake, Borderlands 4 has claimed a spot within Steam’s top ten most-played games, currently ranked seventh. It now stands among giants like Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, PUBG, and Hollow Knight: Silksong, demonstrating its powerful impact in the gaming community.
Moreover, the game isn’t limited to just Steam. It’s also available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with a release for Nintendo Switch 2 scheduled for October 3. Given this extensive availability, the total player count is certainly even higher.
Borderlands 4: A Record-Breaking Playtime
Currently, Borderlands 4 boasts a commendable Metacritic score of 84, categorizing it as one of the best-rated installments in the series, only trailing Borderlands 2. Player reviews laud its enhanced gunplay, upgraded movement mechanics including double jumps and grappling, and the expansive new universe of Kairos that introduces verticality and diversity to combat scenarios.

Looking forward, Gearbox has unveiled a post-launch roadmap that hints at exciting future content. The first major story expansion, titled Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned, is set to roll out in early 2026.
This expansion will feature a cosmic horror-themed storyline, a brand-new Vault Hunter, and new areas to explore alongside the series’ signature array of missions, loot, and cosmetic options. With a mix of new paid and free content on the horizon, the sustainability of the player base remains promising.
While it remains to be seen if the high player count will be maintained, the future looks bright for Gearbox’s latest looter shooter, indicating that Borderlands 4 has the potential to thrive in the coming weeks and beyond.
