Kim Hyun-joong, who rose to fame as a top idol and actor after his role in “Boys Over Flowers,”has caused a stir in South Korea with recent photos of him in a rural setting dressed as a farmer. Speculations quickly arose that he had fallen on hard times and had retreated to the countryside to work as a farmer, following past controversies.
Despite wearing a hat and headscarf to shield himself from the sun and eschewing his usual signature wavy hair, Kim Hyun-joong’s drastically altered appearance did not escape the notice of viewers in these photos. In fact, many were surprised by how different he looked from his days as a heartthrob in “Boys Over Flowers,”to the point where he was almost unrecognizable.
Addressing speculations about his supposed financial struggles leading to a return to farming and his alleged physical decline, Kim Hyun-joong has recently set the record straight. He took to his social media to share a screenshot of an article titled “The Fall of a Hallyu Star,”clarifying that it was merely content for his personal YouTube channel. He also disclosed that he was indeed farming on his own land and even joked about sending a bag of corn to the article’s writer once the harvest was over.
Despite not being active for several years and facing multiple scandals, Kim Hyun-joong remains a wealthy individual. The land featured in his “farmer”images was actually purchased by the singer-actor many years ago for approximately 200 million won (equivalent to 145,000 USD).
Lately, Kim Hyun-joong’s main focus has been on creating music and running his own YouTube channel. His channel features a diverse range of videos which have garnered a significant amount of support from his devoted fans.
In 1986, Kim Hyun-joong rose to fame as a prominent figure in the Hallyu wave, known for his portrayal of the charming second male lead in “Boys Over Flowers.” During this time, he received just as much recognition as Lee Min-ho, with some even claiming that his looks surpassed those of other celebrities. Kim Hyun-joong also played a significant role in popularizing the trend of the “flower boy” aesthetic among men.
Despite the continued success of his acting career following “Boys Over Flowers,”Kim Hyun-joong’s fame was cut short by a scandal in 2014. He was accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Ms. Choi, and after a lengthy legal battle spanning 6 years, he was eventually vindicated and received compensation from Ms. Choi for defamation. However, the damage had already been done and Hyun-joong’s reputation and status had been irreparably tarnished.
