During a full meeting of the National Assembly’s Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee on July 17th, President Lee Hak-jae of Incheon International Airport Corporation addressed inquiries from Democratic Party lawmaker Jeon Yong-gi regarding the controversy surrounding the security guards of actor Byun Woo-seok.
Jeon Yong-gi inquired about the responsible party and what may have been lacking at Incheon Airport.
President Lee Hak-jae acknowledged, “This is an unprecedented incident in the history of Incheon Airport. It is evident that we were not able to anticipate this situation and lacked comprehensive preparations. Despite the high number of celebrity travelers each year, there have been no previous instances of private security firms exercising excessive measures. We will use this incident as a chance to collaborate with the police and devise appropriate measures.”
Jeon Yong-gi expressed concern, stating that the corporation would inevitably face criticism for its poor management. He emphasized the importance of properly protecting and managing the airport, as it is a critical security facility that impacts national security and public safety. He also questioned if there had been any consultation before the security arrangements were implemented. The occurrence of such an incident was a matter of great seriousness, according to Jeon Yong-gi.
Lee Hak-jae responded, expressing that there had been no prior consultation with their team. Typically, security measures are coordinated between private security companies and the police, who ultimately grant approval. The corporation is then informed by the police. In situations like this, it is essential for us to take immediate action on site, but currently, private security firms are responsible for close protection while we focus on ensuring the safety of civilians from a distance.
President Lee addressed the issue of gate control by the security firm, stating that the situation was unacceptable. Jeon Yong-gi expressed his criticism, stating that gate control should have been implemented while all employees were present. He stated that if the gates were blocked and people were hindered, the staff should have taken proper measures to control the situation. He emphasized that the corporation cannot escape responsibility in such a situation.
Lee Hak-jae admitted that the gate had been controlled without proper authorization, which was clearly a violation. He assured that appropriate measures would be taken to hold those responsible accountable and prevent any similar incidents from occurring in the future.
The speaker emphasized that, despite the frequent presence of numerous celebrities at the airport, no private security firm has ever displayed such inappropriate behavior. As a result, the incident was unforeseen and will be used as a chance to implement new protocols. In collaboration with the police, strict guidelines will be established for private security firms operating within the airport and efforts will be made to enhance penalties for any violations.
