In an endearing embrace of tradition, a calico cat named Yontama has recently been appointed as the new stationmaster at Kishi Station in Japan. This unique role is part of a heartwarming custom that spans nearly two decades, captivating the hearts of locals and tourists alike.
The Unique Role of Feline Stationmasters
Kishi Station is renowned for its exceptional charm, where the presence of a cat as a stationmaster adds a delightful twist to conventional railway operations. On January 7, 2026, the nine-year-old Yontama took on this charming responsibility, marking her as the third feline to hold this esteemed title on the Wakayama Electric Railway’s Kishigawa Line.
According to Kyodo News, the tradition of felines serving as stationmasters has been more than just an adorable novelty. These furry ambassadors have played a crucial role in boosting tourism and revitalizing the railway line, which previously faced financial difficulties.
Yontama’s Inauguration Ceremony
The official appointment of Yontama was celebrated with a ceremony held at Kishi Station, where she was presented with a formal letter of appointment and a medallion bearing her title, graciously bestowed by President Kojima.
A Legacy of Feline Leadership
This is not Yontama’s first venture into the world of stationmaster duties; she previously held a similar position at Idakiso Station. The role of a stationmaster cat originates from Tama, who was honored with the title in 2007. After Tama’s passing in 2012, her successor, Nitama, took over until November 2025.
Following Nitama’s death, the position remained unfilled until Yontama stepped in, showcasing the continuity and importance of this role within the community.
Introducing the Next Candidate: Rokutama
During the inauguration, the spotlight also shone on Rokutama, the current Stationmaster Candidate. While Rokutama is still in training, the railway’s president described her development: “akin to a student being sent into service before completing their studies.” Her future as a stationmaster remains uncertain, but she has the potential to follow in Yontama’s pawsome footsteps.
The presence of these feline figures not only brings joy to daily commuters but also highlights the innovative thinking that can save and even enhance local businesses through community engagement and tourism.
