Can you customize Skull and Bones characters?

After a wait much longer than many expected, Skull and Bones is finally almost here. Billed by Ubisoft as a deeply immersive naval combat simulator set in the golden age of piracy, players will be able to customize their ships extensively, but character customization is more restrictive.

Expectations for Skull and Bones have varied wildly since its announcement almost seven years ago. Some expected a direct update to the beloved Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, although this was quickly dismissed by the developer.

One of the main differences is that the game will not feature ground combat in any form. Players can disembark from their ships, but this is mainly to trade and interact with some of the game’s NPCs. With the Beta now available and the full release scheduled for next week, here’s everything you need to know about character creation in the game.

Skull and Bones offers character customization, but it’s limited

After completing the game’s introduction, some customization options become available to the player character. Initially, there are several archetypal characters that can be selected. It’s a system similar to that used by Ubisoft in The Division 2.

Once this is done, it is possible to change the character’s hair, clothes and accessories to make it a little more personal. That said, there will still be plenty of people in the game with very similar pirate designs to yours.

Beyond that, players looking to create outlandish and unusual characters in a similar way to Baldur’s Gate 3 will likely be disappointed. There is plenty of room for customization and changes to the ten ships currently available in the game, which may make up for this.
