A couple in the Netherlands has recently had their marriage annulled due to the use of a ChatGPT-generated speech during their wedding ceremony. This incident raises critical questions about the role of artificial intelligence in personal and significant moments in life.
Artificial intelligence continues to become a central aspect of everyday life for many individuals, offering conveniences that range from streamlining monotonous tasks to enhancing user experiences. Nevertheless, reports suggest that these technologies can sometimes complicate straightforward activities, such as ordering food or, in this case, officiating a marriage.
Unusual Circumstance: Marriage Annulled Over AI Speech
As reported by Reuters, the couple, based in Zwolle, Holland, was married in April 2025, but their marriage was officially annulled on January 7, 2026. The crux of the annulment lies in the fact that the officiant utilized a ChatGPT-generated speech during the ceremony, which led to the conclusion that the couple did not legally affirm their commitment to each other.
The speech unexpectedly highlighted phrases such as, “not only husband and wife, but above all a team, a crazy couple, each other’s love and home base, ” alongside sentiments about mutual support and love even in challenging times. However, the use of AI in this manner proved problematic.

ChatGPT is gaining popularity, being embraced by an increasing number of users daily. However, in this unique case, the integrity of the marriage was called into question.
As a result of the court’s ruling, the couple has officially had their marriage removed from the Zwolle registry. The court acknowledged the significance of the wedding date for both parties but emphasized the legal implications associated with the AI-generated officiant speech.
Currently, it remains unclear whether the couple has plans to remarry or has already done so since the annulment. Nevertheless, sending out invitations for a second wedding might pose a rather awkward situation.
