Chipotle has taken a pioneering step in the food delivery industry by implementing its inaugural drone delivery service in collaboration with Zipline. This innovative initiative, known as Zipotle, commenced on August 21, 2025, in Rowlett, a suburb located near Dallas, Texas.
Through the Zipline app, residents in Rowlett can conveniently place their orders, which are then prepared at the Chipotle location and delivered by autonomous drones. This cutting-edge service uses drones to transport meals directly to customers, hovering approximately 300 feet above their homes before gently lowering the food via a tether. Currently, the system can accommodate orders up to 5.5 pounds, with aspirations to increase this limit to 8 pounds in the near future.

Zipotle: A New Era in Drone Delivery
The pilot program of Zipotle has a targeted rollout, currently limited to select users within Rowlett, operating from 12 p.m.to 8 p.m. Central Time. There are plans to extend these hours to 10 p.m.and broaden accessibility to more customers in the weeks ahead. This strategic timing ensures that customers can enjoy a modernized dining experience and explore the conveniences of drone delivery.
These innovative drones are not only engineered for efficiency but also designed to be silent and environmentally friendly, representing a significant shift towards sustainable delivery solutions. By adopting drone technology, Chipotle aims to enhance the speed of service while reducing reliance on traditional ground transport.
Zipline has established a strong reputation for its aerial delivery of medical supplies both domestically and internationally. Its transition into the realm of food delivery signifies a potential transformation in how restaurants and retailers approach on-demand services in the future. This burgeoning trend is evidenced by Walmart’s recent announcement regarding the expansion of its drone delivery operations, which aims to be available in 100 cities by June 2026.
