In the landscape of Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas (MOBAs) that flourished in the late 2000s and early 2010s, Heroes of Newerth (HoN) carved out a significant niche for itself. Although many players gravitated towards dominant titles like League of Legends and Dota 2, HoN managed to capture a considerable share of the player base during the height of the genre and the esports revolution. However, in a disappointing turn of events, the developers announced the game’s server shutdown in 2022, leaving fans devastated. In a surprising twist, it’s been revealed that Heroes of Newerth is making a comeback.
Heroes of Newerth: The Rebirth Announcement
Recently, Heroes of Newerth unveiled its Reborn announcement video on YouTube, signaling a new chapter for the game.
Since January 1st, 2025, the game’s social media accounts have been unusually active, posting quirky messages and even playfully trolling their followers on Facebook, a stark contrast to their silence since 2021. Though its player count had dwindled, the core community remained passionate.
Many former players expressed their sorrow when the servers initially shut down, highlighting the strong emotional connection to the game. This sentiment may have played a pivotal role in the team’s decision to relaunch HoN, using the shutdown as a strategic marketing angle to reintegrate players into an upgraded, revitalized experience.
In addition, excitement is building around other games in the MOBA space awaiting similar “Reborn” announcements, such as Heroes of the Storm.
What Can Heroes of Newerth Contribute to the Highly Competitive MOBA Landscape?

Upon its release, Heroes of Newerth entered a market already dominated by Dota 1, the MOBA genre’s progenitor, while League of Legends was still in the early stages of building its audience. HoN aimed to blend aspects of both games, delivering a faster-paced experience compared to Dota and a more intricate gameplay style than League.
Critics did not hesitate to label HoN as a ‘clone’ of Dota 1, as many of its heroes and gameplay mechanics closely mirrored those found in its predecessor. Nevertheless, players embraced the exhilarating tempo and strategic gameplay that HoN offered, enabling it to gain a respectable portion of the player base—albeit less than League of Legends at that time.
As Dota 1 waned, Dota 2 emerged and quickly drew away HoN’s players with its groundbreaking esports initiatives and hefty prize pools. This shift marked the beginning of a gradual decline for Heroes of Newerth.

Despite its storied history, Heroes of Newerth still possesses immense potential, contingent upon its ability to innovate. Given that League of Legends and Dota 2 have been continuously evolving, HoN now has the opportunity to return as the “new kid on the block.” To not only survive but thrive, it must introduce fresh concepts and unique features that resonate with the current gaming audience.
As the competition has sharpened, with both League of Legends and Dota 2 embracing rapid gameplay dynamics—once the hallmark of HoN—players are eager to see how this revival unfolds.
