Invincible is set to expand its universe with a new fighting game, aptly titled Invincible VS, crafted by the talented team at Quarter Up, known for their work on Killer Instinct. The game made its debut announcement during the Xbox Games Showcase at the Summer Game Fest 2025, exciting fans of the gritty superhero franchise.

This new title is part of a broader revival of tag-team fighting games, joining the ranks of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls and Riot’s upcoming 2XKO League of Legends fighting game. While details are still emerging and the game is in its pre-alpha phase, there’s already much to discuss based on insights gathered from an exclusive visit to Skybound Studios just prior to the game’s reveal.

Developer Insights: Who is Behind Invincible VS?

Invincible VS is being developed by Quarter Up, a dedicated game studio formed by former developers from Double Helix Games’ Killer Instinct team. The studio’s name nods to the classic arcade tradition where players would place a quarter on the cabinet to claim their next turn.

While the game certainly carries the legacy of Killer Instinct, the creators emphasize their collaboration with the original animators and creators at Skybound. This partnership ensures that Invincible VS stays true to the essence and excitement of the beloved series.

Playable Characters in Invincible VS: Who’s in the Roster?

As of now, the roster for Invincible VS includes a select few playable characters, confirmed to date:

  • Omni-Man
  • Invincible
  • Bulletproof
  • Atom Eve
  • Rex Splode

  • Battle Beast

This 3v3 fighting game format allows for a wealth of character possibilities, and with the rich cast of the Invincible universe, we anticipate even more fighters will make the cut when the game launches.

Game Mechanics: The Core of Invincible VS

Invincible VS is a vibrant 2D 3v3 tag-team fighter where players command three characters per match and can switch between them strategically during gameplay.

Emphasis on Combos

In our recent playtesting at Skybound Studios, developers communicated their vision of emphasizing combative strategy through tagged combos. They expressed concern that many tag games devolve into solitary combos, reducing the multiplayer thrill. To counteract this, Invincible VS features a unique combo meter that limits string hits but refreshes upon tagging another character, enhancing damage potential.

The developers aspire for players to harness the tagging system, diverging from the trend of single-player fights seen in many tag titles.

Introducing Sudden Death

When time expires without a clear victor, players enter a ‘Sudden Death’ phase. During this time, your health bar acts as a timer; it will continuously deplete unless you land a hit on your opponent, with the first player to lose all their health being declared the loser of the round.

Special Moves and Gameplay Dynamics

Special moves are intuitively mapped to a single button but vary based on directional input. This design principle echoes systems found in recent titles such as GranBlue Fantasy VS and DNF Duel. While this may raise eyebrows among veteran players, Invincible VS also incorporates various mechanics to ensure it remains accessible yet nuanced.

Characters can charge normal moves, enhancing damage or altering their effects, and dashing is streamlined with a dedicated button. Unique capabilities, like Atom Eve’s hovering ability, introduce exciting gameplay elements.

Dynamic Character Interactions and Stage Mechanics

Each character in Invincible VS is equipped with distinct interactions that change based on their opponent, reminiscent of the engaging exchanges in Injustice 2.

Characters exhibit fun and witty interactions, showcasing their vibrant personalities throughout battles.

The game will feature two categories of stages: destructible environments that evolve as combat proceeds and static arenas. There’s also a unique mechanic that, when executed correctly, can dramatically alter the battlefield mid-fight.

Note that the version we played was a pre-alpha iteration, and many of these mechanics might evolve as development continues.

Release Timeline for Invincible VS

Invincible VS is projected for launch in 2026 across PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PS5 platforms.

While an official release date remains unconfirmed, fans can stay tuned for further updates and announcements as they become available.
