Controversy Surrounding ILLIT Safety Shorts: ‘I Feel Repulsed’ by K-Netizens

Korean netizens have expressed their discomfort with ILLIT’s safety shorts.

Safety shorts, also known as safety attire, are frequently worn by K-pop idols underneath their stage costumes. Typically worn by female idols, this clothing ensures that wardrobe malfunctions are avoided and prevents any unintentional exposure of skin to the audience during performances. Generally, it is worn under shorter bottoms or crop tops.

Typically, safety shorts are black, but some idols opt for a colored version that matches their outfit. These shorts are typically skin-tight and made from the same fabric as leggings or shapewear.

Despite being a common practice in the K-pop industry, a significant number of people are dissatisfied with ILLIT’s safety shorts.

A post titled “Interesting ILLIT Shorts: Safety or Fashion?”was shared on the popular South Korean online community forum on May 10, 2024. The original poster uploaded several photos of ILLIT’s performance, showcasing their safety shorts on stage.

The dreamlike and youthful concept of ILLIT is well-known. This perfectly complements the group, as their members’ ages span from 16 to 20. This results in the group’s performances featuring soft and flowy outfits, adding a touch of whimsy to their stages.

It appears that this also carries over to their choice of safety shorts. In contrast to the usual black, form-fitting safety shorts worn by female idols, ILLIT’s shorts are more relaxed and voluminous. Some have even likened them to bloomers. The original poster remarked that they resemble the attire of Rozen Maiden dolls.

In the comments, Korean netizens expressed their unease with this decision. Some also pointed out that bloomers are often linked with the controversial “Lolita”fashion, which is heavily criticized for promoting the sexualization of childish mannerisms and appearances. As some fans believed this choice was made to make the performers appear younger, many were left feeling disgusted.

Several comments were written,

  • “I kind of feel repulsed by it…”
  • “I am so repulsed. Imagine making adults wear this…”
  • “No, but they already look young. Why are they doing this? Even if they were old, this would be problematic.”
  • “Even babies nowadays don’t wear this.”
  • “Can’t they dress these girls better? Bang Si Hyuk-ah… Even if this is your taste, I am not going to consume it.”
  • “I don’t know what they are trying to portray… I feel so repulsed.”
  • “It’s giving lolita.”
