Controversy Surrounding Jessica Jung’s 17th Debut Anniversary Banners and Their Impact on SNSD Fans

After Girls’ Generation commemorated its 17th debut anniversary, there was a focus on the current standing of Jessica Jung, a former member of the group.

On August 5, the famous girl group “Nation’s Girl Group”SNSD celebrated their 17th debut anniversary by sharing a full group photo on social media.

On August 1, the team consisting of Taeyeon, Hyoyeon, Tiffany, Sooyoung, Yuri, YoonA, and Seohyun reunited to celebrate Tiffany’s birthday. They also took the opportunity to wish each other well as they enter their 17th year together in the K-pop scene.

Regrettably, Sunny was not able to join the gathering due to her current location in the U.S. However, she made sure to express her gratitude to their youngest member Seohyun, who had photoshopped her image into the group photo.

Despite being under different labels, the eight members maintained a strong and close relationship with each other. This has led netizens to wonder about the current status of Jessica Jung, the group’s former ninth member.

Jessica joined SNSD as one of its main vocalists in 2007, but she departed from the group in 2014. While SM stated that the reason for her departure was to prioritize her fashion brand, BLANC & ECLARE, Jessica denied this and asserted that she was actually forced to leave.

Despite having left a decade ago, there are still fans who acknowledge her impact on SNSD and make sure to remind younger fans that she was a part of the group.

Consequently, her Chinese fans organized a gathering to celebrate what they believed to be her 17th debut anniversary. They displayed congratulatory flags and banners outside the SM building in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, and even arranged for a drone fireworks display over the Han River.

Despite the placement of Jessica’s banners in front of SM, which she was no longer an artist under, Korean SONEs (fandom) were unimpressed and questioned the intention behind this move.

Upon stumbling upon this, netizens could not conceal their confusion and surprise, expressing their thoughts through comments such as:

  • “Hasn’t it been a while since she wasn’t in SM?”
  • “Why is this in front of her former company?”
  • “She’s not Girls’ Generation anymore, please let her go”
  • “The fans are selfish too”
  • “I’m tired of both sides of this fight”
  • “Why in front of the SM building?”

Despite the extravagant “debut celebration show,”K-pop fans were particularly displeased. This can be attributed to the fact that Jessica Jung had already departed from Girls’ Generation in 2014 and severed ties with SM Entertainment. As a result, many are questioning the necessity of hosting such an event in front of the company’s building.

After her departure from SNSD and SM, Jung returned to the US for a period of time before heading to China to continue her career as both an idol and actress under Coridel Entertainment. In November of last year, she released her fourth mini-album, “BEEP BEEP,”and promoted it throughout Asia, with the exception of Korea, due to being “blacklisted”from appearing on music shows and national television.
