Cracker Barrel has recently reversed its plans to remodel its restaurants, reinstating the beloved Uncle Hershel character in its branding. This decision comes after significant public criticism of a new logo that attempted to modernize the company’s image.

In August, the Tennessee-based dining chain introduced a controversial rebranding that included a new logo and the removal of its iconic Americana wall decorations. This move sparked widespread backlash from customers across a spectrum of political views, who accused Cracker Barrel of losing touch with its traditional roots.

The fierce criticism impacted Cracker Barrel’s stock, prompting a swift corporate response. Within a week, the company decided to revert to its previous logo featuring Uncle Hershel, and has now confirmed it is shelving plans for extensive restaurant remodels associated with the rebranding effort.

Revoking Restaurant Remodel Plans

According to a report from the Associated Press, the rebranding initiative was first unveiled in May 2024 by the newly appointed CEO Julie Felss Masino, who previously held leadership positions at Taco Bell and Starbucks. Masino posited that Cracker Barrel needed to evolve to maintain relevance and attract more customers, which included introducing remodeled locations, new menu items, and enhanced kitchen efficiency.

The initial goal was to remodel between 25 and 30 of the chain’s 660 locations by the 2025 fiscal year. However, early feedback from the few remodeled locations indicated dissatisfaction, leading to an online backlash against both the new logo and the redesigned interiors.

Despite the cancellation of the extensive remodels, Cracker Barrel reassures its customers that it remains committed to maintaining its nostalgic ambiance.“We will continue to invest in our restaurants to ensure they are in good shape and meet your expectations, ” the company stated.

For the time being, the familiar rocking chairs, country store atmosphere, and Americana-themed décor will continue to be a staple of Cracker Barrel’s dining experience, solidifying the brand’s connection to its cultural roots.
