After Piers Morgan’s interview with Fiona Harvey, known as the “real Martha,”criminologist David Wilson pointed out a key aspect that was absent from the Baby Reindeer discussion.
Wilson addressed Richard Gadd’s Netflix series and its portrayal of his stalker, Martha (Jessica Gunning), bringing up a concern that had also been pointed out by Piers – the fact that it was presented as a factual account.
The criminology expert continues by emphasizing, “What is often overlooked in this ongoing debate – and it is clear that this story will continue to be discussed – is the fact that thousands of individuals are currently enduring the daily torment of being stalked, which greatly impacts their lives and makes it nearly impossible to function.”
“I believe there should be an increase in resources and information available for individuals who are being stalked. It is crucial that information is easily accessible on where to seek help in these situations.”
He proceeds to give recognition to the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, an organization that offers over-the-phone guidance to individuals experiencing stalking.
“According to him, the main aspect that has been lacking is the acknowledgement that Baby Reindeer should be utilized as a means to address the atrocious act and provide support to its victims.”
Wilson initially watched Baby Reindeer with a mix of “fascination and horror,”as he had previously experienced being stalked himself. However, his feelings soon shifted to “worry,”as he was aware of the potential impact on the real Martha.
“While Fiona Harvey may have acknowledged that she is the character portrayed as Martha, it is understandable that someone in Martha’s situation would struggle to recognize that their behavior was dysfunctional,”he states.
“I would anticipate that they would portray themselves in a manner that downplayed or completely denied the stalking behavior.”
This accusation was among many made about Harvey after her explosive interview with Piers last week. She was accused of lying and shifting the blame onto Gadd, suggesting that he was the stalker.

According to Wilson, a stalker may exhibit an underlying personality disorder, a temporary obsession stemming from their mental health, or they may be clinically involved.
According to him, if Harvey displayed behavior similar to Martha’s, the media attention would only exacerbate her and offer unhelpful validation, now that she has been recognized by fans of Baby Reindeer.
Despite Gadd’s request for the speculation to stop, Wilson does not solely blame the viewers for attempting to identify the real-life inspirations for the show’s characters.
He adds that acknowledging the story’s basis on real events will naturally lead people to inquire about the identity of the real person. This curiosity, he believes, is a result of the “naivety”portrayed in Baby Reindeer.
“It was inevitable that they would be exposed, which is a highly detrimental situation for all parties involved.”
