British YouTube sensations Dan Howell and Phil Lester, collectively known as Dan and Phil, have made headlines by revealing they have been in a romantic relationship for the past 15 years. This announcement follows their individual coming out as gay in 2019.
Known for their engaging content, Dan and Phil have been active on YouTube since the mid-2000s, launching their popular joint gaming channel in 2014. Over the years, their fans frequently speculated about a deeper relationship between the two, especially after their coming out announcements.
In Dan’s heartfelt coming-out video, he shared that he and Phil are “obviously more than friends, ” referring to their bond as that of “actual soul mates.”He expressed how their relationship transcended romance, emphasizing the safety and trust he felt for the first time in his life.
Fast forward to January 2021, when Dan and Phil disclosed they had purchased a home together. However, it wasn’t until four years later that they openly discussed the intricacies of their 15-year relationship.
Dan & Phil Seek Privacy Revealing 15-Year Romance
In a candid YouTube video released on October 13, 2025, Dan and Phil shared that their relationship began in 2009, shortly after they met online. They expressed that they had been waiting for the right moment to disclose their romance, largely due to personal fears and societal pressures. Dan recounted his upbringing in an “extremely homophobic” setting, which complicated his ability to come out.
Additionally, both influencers expressed concerns that revealing their relationship could distract from their careers, suggesting that speculation about their personal lives would heighten the stress they experienced during their rising fame.
“In my mid-twenties, I felt we had to keep our relationship hidden while I was still grappling with my identity, ” Dan explained, highlighting the stark difference between being seen as “Dan and Phil the comedy duo” versus “Dan and Phil the boyfriends.”
Phil echoed these sentiments, stating, “It’s a big scary deal for us. It feels like another mini coming-out.”
Addressing the long-speculated relationship, the duo conveyed their renewed commitment to producing content, even announcing the launch of their much-anticipated podcast.“Our goal is to create laughter; that’s what we’re committed to delivering to you, ” they stated.
While embracing their relationship revelation, Dan and Phil requested privacy from their fanbase, encouraging them to respect certain boundaries. They specified that fans should refrain from “digging into things they don’t share” and “leaking” personal information.
“I want to leave the house without being spied on, even for a meal, ” Phil expressed, while Dan humorously added, “I just want to eat my pasta in peace!”
Fans have largely responded positively and humorously, with many expressing confusion, believing that the couple had been openly dating for years. Their announcement follows other big YouTube revelations, including Markiplier’s recent marriage to his longtime girlfriend, Amy Nelson, after a decade of dating.
