In a compelling new chapter for the Superman franchise, David Corenswet embarks on what promises to be an extraordinary partnership with director James Gunn. However, the journey hasn’t been entirely smooth. Corenswet candidly acknowledges that his meticulous nature can sometimes challenge Gunn’s patience.
The initiative to revitalize Superman—distinct from the previous vision crafted by Zack Snyder—started in 2022, just months prior to Gunn and Peter Safran taking the helm at DC Studios. Selecting the right actor for the iconic role of the Man of Steel is a monumental task, requiring a blend of charisma and gravitas.
For Gunn, Corenswet was more than a fitting visual representation of Superman; he encapsulated the essence of the character. The portrayal of Superman demands more than just physical attributes; it calls for a powerful embodiment of hope and resilience.
David Corenswet’s Inquisitive Approach While Filming Superman

In a recent discussion with Hollywood Authentic, Corenswet revealed his tendency to ask numerous questions as a means of deeply understanding his character. This dialogue often led to dynamic exchanges between him and Gunn.
Corenswet likened his approach to an inquisitive one: if instructed to jump off a cliff, he would want to explore the reasons behind the decision.“It’s important to ask: Why this cliff? Why now? And where do we hope I’ll land?” he recounted, emphasizing his desire for clarity in his actions.
“If you engage with James [Gunn], that’s where I can come off as difficult. What seems like a debate can actually be a quest for understanding, ” he elaborated. He recounted a moment during a heated discussion where Gunn provided feedback that Corenswet felt was misaligned with the scene’s requirements. They exchanged ideas vigorously, which might have appeared confrontational to outsiders.
At one point, Gunn delivered a succinct line that resonated with Corenswet: “Stop. Great. I know exactly what you mean.” Armed with newfound clarity, he was able to execute the take as intended.
Despite Corenswet’s growing confidence throughout the film’s production, he admitted to having to “fake some” of it during his initial day on set, sharing, “I didn’t have a deep connection with James at that point.” The pressure of stepping into the symbolic role added to the anxiety, as he wrestled with thoughts of being scrutinized for his portrayal.
“I felt like I had to channel a sense of confidence, albeit manufactured, in order to fully embrace the essence of Superman, ” Corenswet noted.
Superman is currently playing in theaters, marking a new era for this superhero icon.
