DDoS Attacks Cause Worldwide Outages for FFXIV Servers as Square Enix Investigates

Despite efforts to mitigate the impact, Final Fantasy XIV continues to be plagued by a widespread Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack that has disrupted servers globally, resulting in player dissatisfaction and hindered gameplay.

According to a recent post on the developer’s blog, DDoS attacks commenced at approximately 6AM PDT on March 6, resulting in challenges with player logins and accessing/sending data from the servers. The impact of this attack is global, impacting all data centers in Japan, North America, Europe, and Oceania.

The developers have acknowledged that they are currently investigating the attacks and implementing measures to prevent them. They will continue to update players with more information as the situation progresses. The response from players has been mixed, with some showing understanding and making light of the situation with humorous tweets, while others have turned to social media to express their anger and disappointment.

Despite the ongoing DDoS attacks, Final Fantasy XIV is currently undergoing scheduled maintenance as announced in this notice, which began at 6PM PDT today. This maintenance has taken the game completely offline, but it remains to be seen if the attacks will persist and cause further difficulties for the developers even after the maintenance is completed.

Following negative feedback from players, FFXIV director Naoki Yoshida has recently announced plans for a further graphical update to the Dawntrail benchmark. The updated benchmark, which is expected to be released on May 23 or later in the same week, has coincided with a series of DDoS attacks on the game.

Likewise, the assaults have aligned with the declaration that CDawgVA, a popular content creator, will be embarking on their own journey through Final Fantasy XIV, following the achievement of their $1 million fundraising goal during their Cyclethon.

The eagerly-awaited Dawntrail expansion for Final Fantasy XIV will become available for early access owners on June 28, followed by its official release on July 2, 2024.
