Ryan Gosling’s Unlikely Companion: ‘Moppy Ringwald’

Chris Miller, Phil Lord, and Ryan Gosling
Filming often involves lengthy intervals between takes, which can become rather isolating for an actor portraying a solitary scientist in space. Ryan Gosling discovered a unique way to overcome this solitude—by forming a bond with a mop.
During an interview with IMDb, Gosling shared how directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller embraced his whimsical idea: “They’re really just so fun to work with because they’re willing to explore any direction that the scene is taking us, ” he stated.
He recounted a particular scene after spending around 100 days filming solo: “I really wanted some company, so I said, ‘I want to make a friend out of a mop and I want to do the scenes today with this mop friend.’”

He continued, “They leaped at the chance. They created a mop for me, named it Moppy Ringwald, and we had a wonderful day together… we danced!”
Gosling expressed his gratitude, noting, “Not many filmmakers would halt everything to craft a mop friend for you. They really know how to be great dance partners in moments like that.”
As Project Hail Mary continues to captivate audiences in theaters, fans are left to wonder if a sequel might one day feature the memorable Moppy.
