Demon Slayer fans defend Ufotable against lazy adaptation allegations for Hashira Training Arc episode 5

Despite the fan concerns surrounding the adaptation of this sequel, Tanjiro continues to excel in his training program in episode 5 of the Demon Slayer Hashira Training arc, which was released on June 9, 2024.

During the episode, the main focus was on Tanjiro completing Mitsuri’s and Iguro’s training session. Following this, he also participated in Shinazugawa’s training session, where he was pleasantly surprised to see Zenitsu again. However, things took a turn for the worse when the Wind Hashira got into a heated argument with his brother, Genya.

After rescuing Genya from the Wind Hashira, Tanjiro engaged in a battle with the Hashira. The fight remained true to the source material, causing some fans to criticize Ufotable for taking shortcuts. However, others argued that a faithful adaptation should never be seen as an issue.

The fifth episode of the Demon Slayer Hashira Training arc, titled I Even Ate Demons, covered chapters 132 (the second half) and 133. The episode began with Tanjiro joining Mitsuri’s training session, where he started by enjoying a stack of pancakes before participating in exercises to improve his flexibility.

After completing the task, Tanjiro participated in Iguro’s training session, which enhanced his control and swordsmanship as he had to skillfully maneuver around people before landing strikes with his sword. Despite passing the training, Tanjiro became aware of Iguro’s resentment towards him for developing a close bond with Mitsuri.

As Tanjiro made his way towards Shinazugawa’s training session, he was surprised to encounter Zenitsu, who was flustered and eager to escape the Wind Hashira’s rigorous training. Despite their initial reluctance, both of them eventually joined the session and ended up getting injured.

Tanjiro encountered Genya attempting to converse with Shinazugawa, confessing how he consumed demons in order to continue fighting. Enraged, the Wind Hashira charged towards Genya with the intention of killing him, but Tanjiro intervened and saved him. The altercation was then taken outside, where a fierce battle ensued between Tanjiro and the Wind Hashira.

Despite remaining faithful to the manga series’ chapter and not adding any additional details, the fight between Tanjiro and Shinazugawa received criticism from some fans who accused the studio of being lazy. However, other members of the fandom disagreed and argued that if one cannot appreciate a faithful adaptation, they should try adapting the manga series themselves.

Fans’ Reactions to the Allegations Against Ufotable

The allegations made against the animation studio came as a shock to fans, considering that the main purpose of an anime adaptation is to stay true to the original source material.

Despite some fans suggesting that these individuals take on the task of adapting the anime themselves, others felt that their comments were unappreciative. In fact, some even expressed disappointment, as there are numerous anime series that may have been improved had they been adapted by Ufotable.

“So getting a one to one anime adaptation is a problem now? You guys really need to learn how to be grateful because many fans out there wish their fav manga were animated by Ufotable,”a fan said

“I mean why don’t you go animate it then? Seems ungrateful,”another fan said

“At least be grateful we got something…it’s always the ungrateful ones”another one said

Alternatively, there were fans who were perplexed by the complaints of these individuals, as they believed that the episode was exceptional in every way. They expressed their disbelief at the notion of finding fault with it.

“No way people don’t like this episode bro”a fan claimed

“It looks great. What’s the issue?”another one said

Reflections

The emergence of this issue may be attributed to Ufotable’s adaptation of an arc with only a few chapters, causing fans to demand more with each episode, similar to the Shinazugawa and Iguro versus Tokito fight.

Ufotable should only add enough anime-original content to satisfy the episode quota. Any additional anime-original content would be impractical.
