The second episode of the current season of Demon Slayer, which was recently released, delved into the sorrowful backstory of Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira. Demon Slayer: How Sabito Helped Giyu Tomioka Become the Water Hashira

The second episode of the Demon Slayer Hashira Training arc delved into the tragic past of Giyu Tomioka, while also bringing back a character who had not been seen since the first season of the anime.

Sabito, a former apprentice of Sakonji Urokodaki and Giyu Tomioka’s former best friend, is the character in question. During his debut in Demon Slayer, he aided Tanjiro in his preparations for the Final Selection exam.

It was a shock, but it was later revealed that Sabito had passed away long before. Tanjiro was aided by Sabito’s spirit on his path to becoming a Demon Slayer.

The second episode of the Demon Slayer Hashira Training arc offered insight into the events that ultimately resulted in Sabito’s death, revealing the profound impact he had on Giyu’s life and his journey towards becoming one of the most formidable Demon Slayers.

In the most recent episode, it was disclosed that at the age of 13, Giyu and Sabito crossed paths. They both underwent training with Sakonji Urokodaki and bonded over their shared experiences. However, at that time, there was a significant difference in their proficiency in swordsmanship.

Although Giyu was a weak and vulnerable young boy, Sabito was a skilled and competent swordsman with the potential to become one of the top Demon Slayers in the future. In fact, he was the most formidable candidate for the Final Selection exam in the year that he and Giyu took part in it.

Giyu recalled how Sabito had bravely fought and defeated the majority of the demons in the Final Selection on his own. He tirelessly moved from one location to another, risking his life to save as many people as possible from certain death. Regrettably, Sabito’s selfless acts ultimately led to his tragic end.

As he thought back on his past, Giyu realized the irony of Sabito, the strongest candidate of their year, not being able to pass the Final Selection. He also remembered the last time he saw his best friend, which was during the Final Selection when Sabito protected him from a demon attack.

Upon leaving an injured Giyu in the care of a few of his fellow candidates, Sabito quickly dashed to aid the others who were under siege by a formidable demon in a transformed state. It was in the midst of this intense battle that Sabito’s fortune turned, as his sword broke while facing off against the demon, leaving him vulnerable to the merciless onslaught of its attacks.

After recovering from his injuries, Giyu was heartbroken to discover that Sabito had lost his life battling the transformed demon. The news brought him to tears and he couldn’t help but blame himself for not being strong enough to protect his dear friend. However, Sabito’s sacrifice was not in vain as all of the remaining candidates were able to successfully complete the Final Selection.

Despite passing the Final Selection without killing a single demon, Giyu still did not view himself as a worthy Demon Slayer. He felt that his best friend had protected him and others from death during the selection, and this is why, even in the present timeline of the Demon Slayer series, Giyu Tomioka continues to doubt his worthiness as a Hashira. He believes that he should have perished instead of Sabito.

Despite this, Giyu made sure not to squander the opportunity that Sabito had given him. He pushed himself to his limits during his training and eventually rose to the position of Water Hashira.
