Destiny 2 is currently experiencing its least favorable phase in recorded history, with a significant decrease in player engagement. The number of players participating in this live-service game has hit an all-time low.
On October 6, 2025, a notable milestone was reached—not a celebratory one for Bungie. Their flagship live-service shooter, Destiny 2, recorded a historic low in player numbers.
The peak concurrent player count reached just 16, 067, marking the weakest participation the game has seen, at least on the Steam platform. Alarmingly, at one point during that window, the number dropped to a mere 2, 323 concurrent players—the lowest for an hourly count in Destiny 2’s history.
This data, however, only accounts for the Steam platform and does not include players on consoles or those enjoying Destiny Rising, the mobile spinoff, which has shown stronger support in recent months compared to its AAA counterpart.

While Destiny 2 struggles, its mobile counterpart, Destiny Rising, continues to attract more players.
New Player Count Records for Destiny 2 on Steam
The concerning figure of 16, 067 concurrent players follows closely behind the previous record low noted during the Revenant episode earlier this year. Overall interest in Destiny 2 has diminished since the conclusion of The Light and Darkness saga, capped by the release of The Final Shape in early 2024.
The launch of the first expansion in this new era, titled Edge of Fate, did not generate the same excitement, peaking at just 98, 211 players on Steam, a stark contrast to The Final Shape’s launch day high of 314, 634 players.
Bungie has attempted various changes to enhance the live-service experience in a bid to re-engage players. However, these efforts seem ineffective. A prime example is the newly implemented Portal system, which replaces the Director. This navigational overhaul has been met with mixed reviews, inadvertently complicating navigation and alienating more players.
Looking ahead, Bungie’s next major endeavor is the upcoming Destiny 2 expansion, Renegades, slated for release on December 2, 2025. This expansion is rumored to incorporate Star Wars themes, complete with settings inspired by the iconic saga and a storyline influenced by the renowned films. It remains to be seen whether the prospect of wielding Lightsabers as Guardians will be enough to revitalize interest in Destiny 2.
