In the wake of the announcement regarding the release date of Hollow Knight: Silksong, a wave of developers has chosen to postpone their game launches, pushing dates out as far as 2026 to avoid clashing with this highly anticipated title. Such an impact underscores the enormous respect and influence a game can exert within the industry, a phenomenon that very few games can achieve.
The only other notable example in recent memory is GTA VI, whose reveal created a significant ripple effect, leading to multiple delays within the planned 2025 lineup before it too was shifted to a 2026 release window.
With the original Hollow Knight surpassing 15 million copies sold and the excitement surrounding Silksong reaching a fever pitch, many indie developers now face immense pressure with the game’s imminent launch on September 4.
The Ripple Effect of Silksong’s Release
Indie games that lack the backing of substantial marketing budgets often hinge their success on generating initial hype. Unfortunately, if a game fails to garner visibility, the word-of-mouth recommendations that are critical to its success cannot circulate. To maximize their chances of standing out in a notoriously crowded gaming marketplace, developers have opted to delay their own releases.
One of the most forthright examples comes from the creators of Aeterna Lucis. Although their game is complete, they have decided to push their launch into 2026. In their statement, the developers reflected on the potential overshadowing by Silksong, acknowledging that releasing alongside such a phenomenon would diminish their game’s visibility and unfairly impact both their team’s hard work and the player community:
“Our initial plan was to launch it this September, but after the announcement of Silksong, we are fully aware that our game wouldn’t have the visibility it deserves. Competing with a phenomenon of that scale would not only be unfair to our team’s effort, but also to you, the community, who expect to experience this adventure under the best possible conditions.”

Interestingly, rather than expressing resentment towards the delay, the developers instead voiced gratitude towards Team Cherry, the creators of Hollow Knight, noting their influence on Aeterna Lucis and their other projects. They stated, “There’s no need to wish [Team Cherry] luck—we know Silksong will be a success and a masterpiece. Instead of rivalry, what we feel is gratitude: thanks to them, the metroidvania genre is more alive than ever and, in fact, they were one of the main inspirations that led us to create Aeterna Noctis and the entire saga now in development.”
Similarly, the RPG Faeland, which has been in early access for nearly two years, also decided to delay its 1.0 release, explicitly attributing the postponement to Silksong:

“Our v1.0 launch was set for September 9, but with today’s announcement of Hollow Knight Silksong releasing on September 4, we’ve made the tough call to postpone our release.”
Another example comes from CloverPit, a roguelite slot machine game, which also cited Silksong as the reason for their delay:
“Some of you might already have guessed the reason for the delay: Hollow Knight: Silksong. The release date for Silksong was announced yesterday, and it’s only one day after CloverPit’s original launch date. Silksong is the most anticipated and wishlisted game on all of Steam and we think people will love this game and play it right at launch (including us) but that also means it will overshadow all games launching close to it. So if we stick to our original date we would risk the launch of CloverPit a fair bit.”

The developers of CloverPit expressed their dedication to delivering the best possible gaming experience and emphasized their desire for support at launch, stating:
“We poured our hearts into our little game so of course we want to give it the best possible shot. We hope you can understand – we’ll use the extra time of course to polish the game even further, and we hope for your support at launch either way.”
These cases illustrate only a handful of developers who have candidly acknowledged that Silksong prompted their decision to delay their games. It remains a mystery how many other developers are silently reshuffling their release plans due to the impending arrival of such a highly awaited title.
Regardless of the industry shifts, it appears that many developers, along with gamers, will take a break to experience Silksong upon its release. I know I will be joining them!
