The latest episode of Dexter: Original Sin takes a nostalgic twist on the origins of the iconic Bay Harbor Butcher, while simultaneously alluding to one of the original series’ most controversial conclusions.
In Episode 6 of Original Sin, Dexter finds himself caught up in the pursuit of his next target. However, before he can make any headway, his sister Deb persuades him to join her and her new boyfriend, Gio, for a double date.
As expected from a character like Dexter, who is often seen as socially inept, the evening starts off awkwardly. Yet, with some support from Deb and keen observations of his intended victim, Dexter gradually regains his footing. Those familiar with the original series’ infamous finale may have noticed a subtle jab cleverly woven into a sibling exchange during this episode.
For those who had pushed the image of a certain lumberjack from their minds, Original Sin brings it back into focus. (Caution: spoilers ahead!)
Homage to Lumberjack Dexter
During the eventful double date orchestrated by Deb, she involves Dexter with Gio and Sofia, her best friend who harbors feelings for him. As the day begins, Deb digs through Dexter’s wardrobe in hopes of finding an outfit that meets her standards for “cool”in front of Gio.
She discovers a plaid shirt and explains to Dexter that Sofia has a penchant for men dressed in plaid, quipping about her “weird lumberjack fetish.”
This comment is a clear nod to the character’s transition into the “Lumberjack Dexter”persona, which gained notoriety following the original series’ conclusion in 2013. In the finale, instead of reuniting with Hannah and Harrison, Dexter opts to leap from a boat into a hurricane.
The epilogue reveals that he survives, opting for a life of solitude as a lumberjack, complete with a thick beard. This ending faced intense criticism, with many fans wishing Dexter had met his demise instead.
Even Showtime’s entertainment president, Gary Levine, reflected on the backlash, admitting, “Dexter is a jewel in the crown of Showtime and we didn’t do it justice in the end, and that has always been a burr under my saddle.”
In the follow-up series, New Blood, which premiered in 2021, Dexter had moved on from his lumberjack days to become a clerk at a hunting goods store in Iron Lake, New York.
While opinions on the original finale have softened somewhat over time, it still remains a divisive topic among fans. Debra’s playful reference in Original Sin suggests that the franchise is willing to poke fun at its complicated legacy.
