Diablo 4 Fans Defend Dope Spiritborn Class From Criticism

Diablo 4’s Spiritborn class, part of the Vessel of Hatred DLC, has been announced and has received a mixed response from fans. Nonetheless, there is anticipation among many to experience it firsthand.

Upon the initial announcement of Vessel of Hatred and the Spiritborn class, it was evident that players would be revisiting Kurast in the DLC. This jungle region was previously tormented by Mephisto in Diablo 2 and is also the home of the Witch Doctor class, who aided the Nephalem in Diablo 3 in their fight against the forces of Hell.

The decision to bring back the Witch Doctor as a class in the Diablo 4 DLC seemed logical. However, the class is mainly focused on summoning creatures, which is a role already filled by the Necromancer and Druid in Diablo 4. As a result, Blizzard had to rethink and develop a fresh class, the Spiritborn.

The Spiritborn class will be a mixture of the Witch Doctor and Monk.

During a live stream on July 18, 2024, the Spiritborn was unveiled to the public, showcasing its hybrid nature as a combination of the Witch Doctor and Monk classes from Diablo 3. This announcement was met with a wave of criticism from players who felt that the class was unoriginal.

Despite the initial backlash, other players have now joined in, defending and even commending the Spiritborn. One user directly addressed the negative perception of the community in a Reddit thread, stating:

“Spiritborn appears very impressive, I am eagerly anticipating playing as him in October. He stands out as his own character, distinct from Monk, Druid, Witch Doctor, Rogue, Assassin, Amazon, and others. The abilities and gameplay of Spiritborn seem incredibly unique.”

Despite acknowledging that the character may have been unoriginal, several players still gave positive feedback, stating “Jungle Monk looking good! 8/10”.

“Regarding the Monk class in Diablo 3, if you haven’t played the game, it’s understandable why you may not think it encompasses the elements mentioned. However, if you have played D3, I’m not sure which reveal stream you watched because it truly combines the best of both worlds in a well-rounded manner. This is not meant as a criticism, as I’m excited to see my two favorite classes merged into one. I can’t wait to experience it.”

Many thought the Witch Doctor could be the first DLC character.

Another individual also appreciated the similarities between the class and the Witch Doctor, but noted that it offered a fresh take on the class. They stated, “I absolutely loved playing as the Witch Doctor in Diablo, and Spiritborn gives off a similar feel. However, Spiritborn has more of a “Druid”or natural vibe rather than focusing on Necromancy. It’s a refreshing change and I am loving it.”

Some players remained indecisive, with one expressing their lack of enthusiasm by stating, “Meh, it seems a bit unoriginal. I think they could have done a better job with creating a character with a Jungle theme.”Another player commented, “It’s essentially just a monk with a different appearance.”

The Spiritborn and Witch Doctor both originate from the same area, making it inevitable that there would be some similarities between the two. Additionally, due to high demand from fans, Blizzard saw fit to design a hybrid class in the form of the Monk.

Although the Spiritborn may not be unique enough for certain players, fans of the Monk and Witch Doctor classes from previous Diablo games may discover many appealing aspects. It will also be interesting to see which class will be introduced next year.
