It appears that the Angel Inarius will be making an appearance in Diablo 4, but the question remains whether he will be an ally or an enemy to the player. Here’s why his role is crucial.
In the Diablo series, Inarius plays a crucial role in the world’s creation. With the upcoming release of Diablo 4, fans can expect to see this character make his debut on-screen. The pressing question is whether Inarius will pose a threat to the game’s hero or if he will offer his assistance. Given his past actions and the return of his demonic wife Lilith to Sanctuary, it is safe to assume that the fallen angel will have his own motives.
In addition to being a pivotal character in Diablo 4, Inarius and Lilith are often seen as the Romeo and Juliet of the Diablo series, with hints of Adam and Eve. The only distinction is that one is a Heavenly Angel while the other is a Demonic Princess of Hell.
Inarius will play a significant role in both the story and gameplay of Diablo 4, which is the reason for his prominent presence.

Inarius in Diablo 4
In order to gain insight into Inarius in Diablo 4, we must delve into the origins of the Diablo series – a time before the existence of humans or their world, Sanctuary. As a formidable Angel, Inarius commanded the armies of the High Heavens in their ongoing war against the Prime Evils of Hell. He valiantly fought against Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto, but ultimately succumbed to the might of the Lords of Hell and was taken captive.
Despite being a prisoner of Hell for countless millennia, Inarius received no rescue attempts from his Angelic brethren and was subjected to endless torture. As a result, he grew resentful towards his former allies and also became aware of discord among the ranks of Hell. In fact, some of the Demon lords had grown weary of the never-ending war against Heaven and desired for it to come to an end.
After some time, Lilith, the daughter of Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred and Diablo’s brother, would release Inarius from captivity. She had been plotting a revolt against the forces of Hell and convinced Inarius to join her in rebelling against Heaven. Enthralled by her, he agreed and the two formed a partnership against their former rulers, also embarking on a romantic relationship that gave birth to hybrid beings known as Nephalem, born of both demonic and angelic blood.

Building Sanctuary
Inarius and Lilith forged a new realm for themselves, their offspring, and any other Demons or Angels seeking escape from the Endless War. Despite this, their union and progeny were deemed abominations by both the Heavenly and Infernal realms. As a result, both sides launched an attack on Sanctuary, decimating everything the couple had constructed, including their beloved children.
Lilith came to the realization that her Nephalem offspring possessed immense power that surpassed even that of the Prime Evils and the Aegis Council. As a result, she began manipulating them to act as her weapons against both groups. Her thirst for control and dominance grew with each passing day, putting all of creation in peril. Inarius, driven to protect existence itself, ultimately betrayed Lilith and condemned her to an eternal imprisonment in the abyss.
Despite eventually calling off their forces and continuing their own conflict, Heaven and Hell would turn their attention to Sanctuary, making it their primary battleground as they vied for control over this new world. The Nephalem, who had evolved into humans, would still exhibit signs of their ancient power, with some becoming champions who defended Sanctuary from the likes of Diablo and his minions in each of the Diablo games.

Inarius in Diablo 4
Despite being a double-crosser, Inarius would continue to reside in Sanctuary, using his power from the shadows to manipulate humanity. His first step was to establish a religion centered on himself, twisting the narrative to portray himself as a heroic figure and the protector of all mankind. Due to the antagonistic nature of the heavenly forces towards humans, this belief system quickly became the prevailing religion in Sanctuary.
In Diablo 3, the High Heavens are invaded by Diablo himself, causing Angels, humans, and Nephalem to unite and fight against him. This attack not only results in the destruction of the Aegis Council, but also serves as a trigger for Malpheal (The Angel of Death) to rebel against Heaven and launch an attack on Sanctuary.
Despite the lessened significance of Heaven and Hell, humans (led by their champions, the Nephalem) rise to become the dominant force in the world by the conclusion of Diablo 3. Yet, this outcome aligns with a prophesied event – the resurgence of Lilith. Upon her return, she sets out to dismantle the religion established by Inarius, potentially in an attempt to draw him out for a showdown.
