Did Ice Spice Plagiarize (G)I-DLE ‘Nxde’ MV? Netizens Discuss

There are accusations that Ice Spice has plagiarized a scene from (G)I-DLE’s music video for “Nxde”.

The music video for “Oh Shhh…,”the latest release by American rapper Ice Spice, was released on July 26, 2024. This collaboration with Travis Scott was well-received by Ice Spice’s fans, but it also sparked criticism from the K-pop community for its similarities with (G)I-DLE’s “Nxde”music video.

Fans have specifically pointed out similarities between one of Soyeon’s solo scenes in the music video and a scene in Ice Spice’s performance. In both instances, Soyeon is rapping inside a glass case in the center of a museum, attracting attention from onlookers. She is adorned in an elaborate white ensemble and strikes poses while enclosed in the glass case, causing displeasure among viewers.

In her music video, Ice Spice is depicted in a glass case within a museum, wearing a white two-piece outfit. As the viewers of the museum appear displeased by Ice Spice’s provocative persona, the rapper confidently poses and delivers her verse.

Despite the various components such as the setting, outfit, and reactions of disgusted museum visitors being highlighted, people have also noted that the editing and transitions share similar elements. This is evident in both videos as they utilize a dramatic reveal to showcase the stars in the glass case, with the timing of shifting focus between the audience and the glass case being almost identical. As a result, a video comparing the two scenes has gained significant attention on social media.

The response to the allegations has been varied. While some view this as clear plagiarism because of the numerous similarities, they are calling for the director and editor of Ice Spice’s “Oh Shhh…”music video to address the accusations. On the other hand, others argue that the props and transitions utilized are not original and have been previously seen in other works.
