Discord has unveiled an innovative “ignore” feature, enabling users to manage unwanted messages from individuals without resorting to blocking them entirely. This latest addition is aimed at enhancing user experience by providing more control over interactions.
Since its launch in 2015, Discord has consistently evolved, rolling out a plethora of new features and redesigns to enhance its messaging platform. Noteworthy among its recent updates is the introduction of the “ICYMI” (In Case You Missed It) feed in October, which allows users to stay updated on activities across all their joined servers.
Despite these advancements, Discord’s blocking feature had raised concerns among many in the community. Users expressed the need for an option to mute messages without shutting down communication channels completely.
The New “Ignore” Feature: Enhancing User Control
On February 10, 2025, Discord officially announced the rollout of the ‘Ignore’ feature, coinciding with Safer Internet Day. This new functionality allows users to “manage their social boundaries in a gentler way, ”according to company representatives.
Discord noted that while the existing block mechanism can be effective, it often comes across as confrontational, especially for younger users who might prefer a more subtle approach to distancing themselves from others. With blocking, users are completely shielded from messages, but the “ignore” feature introduces a more relaxed alternative.
With the ignore function, users will still receive direct messages (DMs) from the muted individual, yet they can opt not to review these messages right away. Notifications for these DMs will be suppressed, allowing users to check them at their convenience, thereby protecting their peace of mind.

Additionally, Discord is set to debut a redesigned desktop app in 2025, which began rolling out in early February. This redesign was hinted at in 2024, as four different interface concepts captured user interest on various social media platforms.
While the company has yet to provide detailed insights into this design refresh, early feedback from users has been overwhelmingly positive on platforms like X.
With these enhancements, Discord reaffirms its commitment to foster a safer and more user-friendly environment, catering to the evolving needs of its community.
