Discord is set to launch its latest initiative, the Teen By Default program, globally in March. This new program aims to enhance user safety by implementing refined safety settings and age verification systems for all Discord users.

As outlined in an official press release, the goal of this update is to ensure an age-appropriate online experience. This includes restrictions on sensitive content, limitations on communication tools, and access to certain private spaces unless a user’s account confirms they are an adult.

The Mechanics of Teen By Default Features

The Teen By Default update introduces a requirement for age verification for specific platform features. Users may be prompted to verify their age when attempting to modify settings or access restricted areas, which includes servers, channels, app commands, and message requests.

To facilitate this process, Discord will utilize a robust age assurance system that provides multiple verification options. Users can opt for facial age estimation technology or submit a government-issued ID through partnered vendors. More methods for verification are expected to be introduced in the future.

Additionally, the platform is introducing an age inference model that discreetly analyzes data to determine if an account is likely associated with an adult user. In instances where more confirmation is necessary, users may need to engage in multiple verification methods.

Key Privacy Protections:

  • On-device processing: All video selfies used for facial age estimation remain exclusively on the user’s device.
  • Quick deletion: Identity documents submitted to vendor partners are deleted promptly, typically immediately after age verification is complete.
  • Straightforward verification: Users typically need to complete the verification process only once, which helps tailor their Discord experience to their confirmed age category. Multiple method requests will occur only if further clarification is required.
  • Confidential status: Other users will not be able to view a person’s age verification status.

In addition to these age verification measures, Discord is rolling out global default safety settings. Until an account is verified as belonging to an adult, sensitive content will remain obscured, while access to age-restricted servers and channels will be limited to those verified as adults.

Other enhanced features include:

  • Message requests from unknown individuals will automatically filter into a distinct inbox, with only adult-verified users able to adjust this setting.
  • Friend requests from unfamiliar users will trigger warning prompts.
  • Speaking privileges on server stages will be confined to accounts verified as adult.

Savannah Badalich, Head of Product Policy at Discord, emphasized the timing of this announcement to align with Safer Internet Day. She noted, “Nowhere is our safety work more important than when it comes to teen users. The global rollout of the teen-by-default settings enhances existing safeguards, ensuring that teens have robust protections while giving verified adults more flexibility.”

Furthermore, she reaffirmed the company’s commitment to continually shaping its products around teen safety principles, collaborating with experts, policymakers, and Discord users to promote the wellbeing of teens on the platform.

Discord’s Teen By Default initiative builds on its existing safety features like Ignore, Family Center, and the Warning System as it prepares to make these critical changes available to users worldwide in March.
