Discord’s Free Upload Limit Decreased to 10MB: “Storage Management is Expensive”

Discord has decreased the maximum file size for free users to 10MB per file, explaining that it is due to financial and operational considerations.

Despite not being known for its generous file-sharing limits, Discord previously provided a 25MB limit for free users. However, the company has recently revised its support page to indicate that the upload limit for free users has been reduced to 10MB.

“Discord receives and securely stores millions of files every day for future access. In order to effectively manage storage costs, we continuously analyze user behavior and storage requirements. Our data has revealed that 99% of users typically upload files smaller than 10MB, as stated in the revised support page.”

In April of last year, Discord raised its file-sharing limit to 25MB from 8MB for free users.

Even though the 10MB limit is not as bad as others, it may still be bothersome for individuals who often share high-quality photos and videos. The messaging suggests using Nitro for those seeking higher sharing limits.

According to the company’s official support page, we offer a unique storage solution where your files will be kept for as long as you require. It is essential for us to manage our storage sustainably, as it can be expensive. For those who need additional upload capacity, we have Nitro Basic with a 50MB limit, and Nitro provides up to 500 MB, ensuring that you have suitable options to meet your needs.

It may not be common knowledge, but a Nitro Basic subscription is priced at $3 per month. Nitro users, on the other hand, pay $10 per month and have access to features such as streaming 4K videos and using emojis in channels. In contrast, messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram have a maximum file size limit of 2 GB.

This year, Discord has implemented notable modifications to the platform, such as revising the user interface and incorporating in-app advertisements.
