On August 6th, the Hankyoreh newspaper acquired medical records from Bucheon W Jin Hospital, which is managed by psychiatrist Yang Jae-woong. The records were then examined by a professional psychiatrist with 10 years of experience.
Despite the bereaved family’s claim that patient Park died due to abdominal pain and intestinal obstruction caused by drug side effects at Yang’s hospital, an analysis revealed that the drug administered to Park was misused despite its potential to cause significant side effects.
Park’s progress report indicated that the patient was admitted to the hospital for addiction to diet drugs. On the first day of hospitalization, she consumed a total of 5 different types of medications.
According to the medical specialist, it appears that the medical staff have reached a consensus that a single medication may not have a calming effect. Many of these medications are antipsychotics and psychotropic drugs, with risperidone being particularly potent at a high dosage. The specialist explained that administering these drugs intramuscularly can have a powerful effect, likening it to an “elephant injection.”However, it is important to note that there may be potential side effects.
Ever since then, the patient has been experiencing rambling and delirium, which appears to have resulted in issues with her digestive and muscle systems as a result of the side effects of mental agents.
The psychiatrist noted that psychoactive agents commonly have side effects such as dry mouth, decreased bowel movement, indigestion, constipation, dysuria, dry eyes, and delirium, as well as muscle system side effects like muscle tremors, acute muscle tension abnormalities, left anxiety stones, and neurodegenerative malignant syndrome. Additionally, there were minimal checks conducted by medical staff at the initial stages.
Furthermore, he stated that the victim was unable to swallow the drug during the second half due to feeling drowsy and weak from the effects of the drug. As a result, injections were administered instead of oral medication. He also mentioned that despite the victim’s inability to control her body enough to swallow the drug, the medical staff chose to use a high ‘titer’ injection.
Eventually, Park became stuck in the isolation room (also known as the stable room) on the evening of May 26. She knocked on the door to seek help for her abdominal pain, but instead of receiving assistance, the guardian and nursing assistant restrained her by tying her hands, feet, and chest to the bed. This occurred at 00:30 on May 27 and unfortunately resulted in her death. According to the National Forensic Service’s autopsy, the cause of death was determined to be “acute pseudo intestinal obstruction.”
Currently, the family of the deceased holds the belief that the hospital failed to provide adequate care for Park as her health worsened. As a result, they have taken legal action and filed a criminal complaint against six individuals, including hospital director Yang Jae-woong, for the charge of abandonment.
In September of this year, Hani and Yang Jae-woong revealed their marriage plans after being in a relationship since 2022. However, Yang Jae-woong faced mounting criticism when it was discovered that they had announced their marriage only four days after the death of a patient. This backlash sparked rumors and speculation about the couple potentially postponing their wedding.
