EA has officially stated that they have no intention of developing a sequel to Apex Legends, as Respawn is currently engaged in a “systematic rethink”of the battle royale game.
In recent months, Apex Legends has witnessed a significant decline in its player base. Various issues have driven players away, including persistent server challenges, rampant cheating, and simply the desire for fresh gaming experiences.
In response to these challenges, Respawn has introduced a variety of updates aimed at revitalizing Apex Legends, featuring new gameplay mechanics, innovative game modes, and comprehensive anti-cheat efforts. Nevertheless, these initiatives have not halted the downward trend in player numbers.
Although the game’s situation may not be as dire as some might suggest, both Respawn and EA have acknowledged their commitment to a thorough evaluation of the game’s future. However, they have dismissed the notion of releasing a completely new title akin to Overwatch 2.
In a statement during the October 29 earnings call, EA CEO Andrew Wilson remarked, “Putting our global player community in a position to choose between their past investments and future innovations is never advantageous.”
He continued, “Our goal is to keep innovating within the core gameplay experience, which is evident as each new season brings larger changes and modifies key elements within those seasons. We’re also looking to create more engagement opportunities beyond what’s currently available in the core mechanics.”
Apex Legends has seen a steady loss of players throughout the past year.
Wilson also highlighted that “in the landscape of live service games, sequels have rarely outperformed their predecessors.”
Competitors like Warzone and Fortnite have taken different paths with their respective updates. Fortnite achieved a revival by reverting to its classic gameplay style, which resonated well with fans. In contrast, Call of Duty faced challenges when transitioning from Warzone to Warzone 2, failing to recapture its original success.
