Fable is poised to embrace a unique storytelling approach using mockumentary-style interviews with its characters, drawing inspiration from popular series like The Office. This innovative method promises to infuse the game’s narrative with humor and personality, making the experience even more engaging for players.
After a significant hiatus of 16 years, the Fable franchise is making a highly anticipated comeback, with a scheduled release in 2026. First announced in 2020, the latest installment is being developed by Playground Games, creators of the acclaimed Forza Horizon series. During the January Xbox Developer Direct, the team confirmed that fans can expect the game to launch in the autumn.
This eagerly awaited RPG is set to offer a plethora of features that longtime fans have anticipated, including extensive character customization, a morality system, and romance options that deepen player engagement. Fable retains the quintessential British charm that characterized earlier installments, a key element highlighted by Game Director Ralph Fulton, who shared that classic British comedies have significantly influenced the project.
In a revealing interview with Xbox Wire, Fulton referenced popular comedies such as Peep Show and The IT Crowd, noting that The Office has particularly inspired many of their creative choices.“Not just that IP, but a lot of the techniques and the devices that it’s popularised, ” he said, emphasizing the appeal of “grounded, awkward style of humor.”
Integrating Mockumentary Interviews in Fable’s Narrative
Several trailers released thus far feature characters engaging directly with the camera in a mockumentary-style interview format. This technique, reminiscent of many successful mockumentary films and television series, including The Office—originally launched by Ricky Gervais in 2001—will be a recurring element within the game itself.
“The other cool thing about The Office is something we’ve kind of nicked. You’ve maybe seen in our trailers that we have a sort of mockumentary interview style, ” Fulton elaborated.“I think a lot of people assume we just did that for those trailers, but it’s actually a device we use throughout the game.”

This interview style allows for seamless integration of character insights and humor, presenting jokes or character nuances that might be awkwardly forced in traditional cutscenes. Fulton noted, “I’ve never seen it in games before, ” highlighting a fresh narrative strategy.
Moreover, Fable’s homage to classic sitcoms extends beyond its narrative style. Fulton confirmed that notable actors from these beloved shows will lend their voices to the game, enriching its character roster. Already announced is Richard Ayoade from The IT Crowd as Dave, a “vegetable enthusiast, ”along with renowned talents like Matt King from Peep Show and Stephen Fry from Blackadder.
