The Resident Evil 4 Remake initially featured an intriguing segment known as Chapter 0, which would have allowed players to take on the role of Ashley Graham as she sought to escape from her captors before Leon’s arrival. This concept was revealed by modder Thekempy in a recent YouTube video, where he discussed the remnants of this chapter that remain in the game, although they are not fully developed and can only be accessed through mods.

Thekempy’s exploration, while filled with speculative elements regarding the potential gameplay of Ashley’s early moments, sheds light on multiple unused prompts for enemy encounters and cutscenes. This data enabled him to reconstruct what Chapter 0 may have involved.

Set within a compact zone in the game’s initial village area, Ashley would have navigated through a stealth sequence to avoid the Las Plagas-infected locals, ultimately leading to her capture. This sequence culminated in her imprisonment, where Leon later finds her. Teasers of this sequence can be observed in pre-release trailers for the Remake.

The Reason Behind the Cut Content

While the exact rationale for the removal of Chapter 0 remains unclear, Thekempy hypothesizes that the structured nature of this stealth segment might not have aligned with Capcom’s vision for the game’s replayability. Given Resident Evil 4’s strength in offering varied gameplay experiences, including multiple playthroughs, a scripted section could potentially disrupt the flow.

Regardless of the reasoning, it’s fascinating to delve into the behind-the-scenes aspects of game development, particularly what creative elements remain on the cutting room floor.

Since its release in 2023, Resident Evil 4 Remake has received significant acclaim. The franchise is set to continue with the upcoming installment, Resident Evil Requiem, scheduled for release on February 27, 2026, which will feature the return of Leon S. Kennedy along with a new character, Grace Ashcroft.
