When is Free Comic Book Day?
The date for Free Comic Book Day 2024 has been announced as May 4, 2024. This event typically takes place on the first Saturday in May following the original FCBD, which was established in 2002 by Joe Field, a comic shop owner, and Jim Valentino, co-founder of Image Comics. It was strategically planned to coincide with the release of Spider-Man in order to take advantage of the growing popularity of comic book movies such as X-Men and Blade.
The tradition has been for the original release date to remain consistent, with FCBD occurring on the first Saturday in May every year (except for 2004’s event, which was moved to July to coincide with the release of Spider-Man 2).
Free Comic Book Day: How to Get Your Hands on Free Comics
To receive Free Comic Book Day comics, all you have to do is go to your nearby comic store. However, the availability of comics may differ depending on the location. To locate your local store, you can refer to Comic Shop Locator.
The FCBD offerings are divided into two tiers, Gold and Silver, which indicate the titles’ availability. Gold titles are readily available at all participating shops, while Silver titles must be specifically requested by the shop. Therefore, Silver titles may not be as widely accessible.
Although the comics are available for free, your local comic shop still needs to order them, although at a significantly reduced cost. Therefore, it is often considered courteous for fans to show their support by purchasing a few comics while visiting the store for the freebies. Additionally, some shops may even have exclusive sales or events for FBCD, such as opportunities to meet creators or participate in contests.
