Everything we know about Game of Thrones prequel A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

Another Game of Thrones prequel series, titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, is officially in development at HBO. It will bring the stories of Dunk & Egg to the television screen, and we have gathered all the details so far – including its place in the Song of Ice and Fire timeline and early plot hints.

Ever since the success of Game of Thrones, George R.R. Martin’s written work has been a major source of live-action content for HBO. As the franchise has gained widespread popularity, several spinoffs have been approved, and House of the Dragon is the most recent addition. This is a testament to the enduring appeal of Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series.

HBO has recently confirmed that it will be proceeding with another prequel series, which has a long working title: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.

With Martin back on board and a full season already commissioned, instead of just the usual pilot episode, the next Game of Thrones spinoff series is moving full speed ahead.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Does the Game of Thrones prequel have a release date?

Currently, there is no specific release date or estimated release window for HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms series.

At the moment, it seems that we still have several years to go before principal photography begins. Filming is scheduled to start in Spring of 2024, unless there are any additional delays.

In an April 17 blog post, Martin confirmed that writing for the show was progressing well and that the pilot script had already been completed. However, due to the 2023 Writers Guild strike, work on the remaining episodes had to be halted. In a follow-up post on May 7, Martin announced that the writer’s room would be closed for the duration of the strike.

The strike dragged on for months, causing not only this Game of Thrones prequel series to be put on hold, but also halting many other expensive projects.

Owen Harris, most recognized for their contribution to Black Mirror, has been appointed as an executive producer for the new spinoff. Additionally, Harris will be directing the initial three episodes of the show.

When is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms set?

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms takes place approximately 90 years prior to the events of Game of Thrones, positioning it about a century ahead of House of the Dragon and firmly in the timeline between these two popular HBO shows.

The Targaryen dynasty continues to hold onto the Iron Throne during this time, with one of their descendants serving as a main character in the spinoff series, which will be discussed further below.

Plot Details for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: A Game of Thrones Prequel

Outside of the main Song of Ice and Fire plot, Martin has also published three shorter novellas featuring characters affectionately called ‘Dunk and Egg.’ Although originally released as individual, compact stories, they have now been gathered together in ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.’

The debut season of HBO’s latest spinoff will cover the first of these three novellas, recounting the tale of how Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and Aegon V Targaryen (Egg) initially joined forces.

As their journey began, the duo crossed paths at a competition in Ashford Meadow. It was here that they struck up a friendship, with Dunk taking on the role of a ‘hedge knight’ and Egg joining as his squire. Their initial quest leads them to Dorne, a lively and recognizable destination for fans of Game of Thrones.

Number of Seasons for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

It has been officially announced that the initial season of the show will consist of six episodes, potentially setting the stage for additional seasons in the future.

The first season is planned to adapt the first short story and Martin is optimistic that if it achieves success, HBO will continue by adapting the following two novellas into their own separate seasons. Therefore, the new spinoff show is guaranteed at least three seasons. However, there is potential for even more seasons to be produced.

“On his blog, Martin revealed that in addition to the published stories, he still has plans to write all the other Dunk & Egg novellas. It’s uncertain how many extras the renowned author has in mind, but he hinted that there may be more than he originally anticipated.”

If the pair continues to captivate global audiences, it is likely that Dunk and Egg will remain on our television screens for numerous years to come.
