Despite having all of his fingers severed and scattered throughout Japan, the King of Curses, Ryomen Sukuna, has continued to exist and grow stronger for centuries. This is due to the fact that his severed fingers carry the remnants of his soul, making them a potential source of danger.
The entire premise of Jujutsu Kaisen revolves around these cursed objects, serving as both a danger and a driving force in the story.
The Importance of Sukuna’s Fingers in Jujutsu Kaisen
The fragments of Sukuna’s soul reside in his fingers, imbued with portions of his immense power. These individual fingers hold the strength of a special-grade curse and entice other curses to come closer, tempting them with the promise of increased power.
Despite lacking a specific pattern in their dispersion, the sudden awakening of long-dormant curses indicates their proximity. Upon consumption, the fingers bestow extraordinary powers and enhanced abilities upon the consumer.
Sukuna’s Origin of Curse Objects
Despite the passage of a thousand years, Sukuna allowed Kenjaku to split his soul into cursed objects, ensuring his future reincarnation. The immense cursed energy made destroying these objects nearly impossible, allowing Sukuna to persist through the years.
Throughout the centuries, the fingers have been known to draw in curses and nourish their powers, resulting in their continuous growth in strength. Tokyo Jujutsu High School had come into possession of six of these cursed objects.
Collection and Consumption of Sukuna’s Fingers
Following the consumption of the first finger, Itadori’s destiny fell into the hands of the Jujutsu Society. Once Gojo discovered that Itadori possessed the ability to control his body while sharing his soul with Sukuna, he appoints him with the task of devouring all of Sukuna’s fingers. Upon completion, Itadori’s execution would signify the ultimate defeat of Sukuna.
Itadori has consumed a total of fifteen fingers throughout the series. Following the first finger, Gojo presents Yuji with a second one to assess his control. The third finger is consumed by Sukuna after being retrieved from a cursed spirit.
Fushiguro obtains an additional finger of Sukuna’s, bringing the total number of fingers in Itadori’s possession to four. When Itadori is found unconscious by Nanako and Mimiko during the Shibuya Incident, they give him the fifth finger which he uses to summon Sukuna.
- Overwhelming Consumption
Jogo, who originally possessed ten fingers, offers them all to Itadori. By the conclusion of the Shibuya Incident Arc, Itadori has acquired a total of fifteen fingers. However, Sukuna is reborn within Fushiguro’s body and consumes four additional fingers obtained by Uraume.
- Legs Full Power Returns
Despite being unable to locate the final finger, Sukuna resorts to consuming his own mummified corpse as a substitute. Gojo had previously concealed the finger, but it is eventually discovered that Rika had already consumed it, granting Yuta the ability to replicate Sukuna’s Shrine and Cleave.
How Strong Are Sukuna’s Fingers?
Sukuna’s fingers possess enough strength to be considered special-grade cursed objects, indicating that they hold the same level of cursed energy as special-grade curses.
Despite facing the strongest sorcerer of their generation, Gojo Satoru, the fingers remained indestructible. Even after being sealed for a considerable amount of time, they continued to pose a threat by attracting curses wherever they were.
Can Sukuna’s Fingers Be Consumed by Anyone?
Sukuna’s fingers are fatal to ordinary humans if consumed and cannot be digested by just anyone. Additionally, cursed spirits are unable to serve as suitable hosts for Sukuna’s soul.
It was surprising that Itadori was able to maintain his consciousness and prevent Sukuna from reincarnating. He effectively caged Sukuna’s spirit and was able to retain control of his body for the majority of the time. This was a rare feat, as not everyone possessed the ability to do so, highlighting Itadori’s exceptional case.
