Expert Analysis: Deadlock Will Have Devastating Impact on Overwatch 2’s Player Base

The most fervent advocates of Overwatch 2 are warning that Valve’s upcoming hero shooter Deadlock will have a major impact on the OW community, comparable to an atomic bomb.

Deadlock, Valve’s FPS MOBA that has not been kept a secret, is currently undergoing playtesting on Steam. Players who have had the opportunity to try it are already raving about its quality.

Despite the fact that gameplay leaks surfaced in May, the game’s existence has been known for a while. The ongoing test period has only further highlighted the threat it poses to Overwatch.

ZP, an Overwatch commentator who has been around since the early days of OW1, issued a warning on X stating that Deadlock would attract a significant portion of the player base.

According to him, when [Deadlock] is fully released, it will have a huge impact on OW, comparable to an atomic bomb. He believes that not only will it greatly affect the current professional scene, but it will also significantly decrease the number of players in the casual space.

He continued to forecast that an astonishing 80% of Overwatch’s content creators would make the switch to Valve’s game.

“There is a possibility that Twitch for OW will remain inactive for several months and may not fully bounce back. This is because a significant number of users might permanently switch to other platforms.”

Fellow Overwatch commentator and ex-professional player Reinforce also joined in the conversation on X, praising Deadlock as “the best game I’ve played since the release of Overwatch.”

Taimou, a former professional player of Overwatch, expressed a similar opinion by stating that the game shared on a social media platform is “undoubtedly the greatest game I have experienced since 2016’s Overwatch.”

In the responses, Crimzo and Apply, among other OW stars, agreed by stating, “Yeah, I can’t stop playing it,”and “I’m eager to play some ranked matches and climb the virtual leaderboards.”

This cautionary message regarding Overwatch 2 arises due to the game’s current struggle to determine whether it should continue with 5v5 gameplay or return to the original 6v6 format, following negative feedback from players regarding the sequel’s format.

Blizzard has revealed that they are currently conducting experiments with 6v6 and other queue types in order to determine the best fit. However, as new hero shooters such as Marvel Rivals and Deadlock are on the horizon, it may prove challenging for Blizzard to regain its devoted fanbase, particularly if ZP’s predictions prove to be accurate.
