Twitch streamer ExtraEmily found herself in hot water after inadvertently referring to a viewer as a “simp” during her IRL livestream on September 17.
The term “simp,” which was officially added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary in September 2023, is defined as “to show excessive devotion to or longing for someone or something.”
While parked in a car enjoying snacks with friends, her associate FanFan informed ExtraEmily that a viewer had generously gifted her 100 subscriptions.
To everyone’s astonishment, ExtraEmily exclaimed, “Simp!” leaving those in the vehicle dumbfounded as they humorously probed her about her unexpected remark.
“I didn’t mean to… I meant to say, Nick. I don’t know why I said simp,” she expressed, clearly startled.
“Your true thoughts came out,” joked Nmp from the backseat. “I did not mean that!” ExtraEmily insisted.
She then attributed the slip-up to her reading the chat box, implying that she confused a viewer’s name with her reaction.
“I either read chat or something… I would never say that!” the streamer attempted to clarify, justifying her blunder.
Emily, who boasts an impressive 398K followers on Twitch, faced backlash from netizens after she playfully trolled the fan responsible for the generous donation.
“Yeah, am I crazy, or was that a nothing response for 100 subs?” questioned a Reddit user. “I feel like even streamers who are completely checked out usually respond to that much. It’s such a subdued response that it made me wonder if I misheard and it wasn’t actually that many or something,” they elaborated.
Another social media user chimed in, suggesting that there should be restrictions on the number of gift subscriptions that viewers can purchase, as they disapproved of the substantial amounts some individuals spend on streamers.
