Fallout 4 Players Release Mod to Roll Back Script-Breaking Update on PC

PC players of Fallout 4 have promptly published a mod that reverts the game’s “next-gen”update, which disrupts compatibility with popular mods like the script-extender for Fallout 4.

In 2024, Fallout 4 continues to be a popular game as players return to it following the release of a TV show. A “next-gen”update has been made available on all platforms, such as PS5, Xbox, and PC. However, there are complaints from certain PC players and modders about the update.

Dean Carter, a well-known modder, recently uploaded a video discussing the highly anticipated Fallout London mod created by a team of fellow modders. This mod, which was described as being “DLC-sized,”was originally scheduled for release on April 23. However, due to the announcement of a next-generation patch, the release date has been postponed indefinitely. This is because the latest version of the game is not compatible with important tools like the Fallout 4 Script Extender, which is essential for many dedicated Fallout 4 mods.

“According to the Fallout 4 Script Extender page, the 1.10.980 update on April 25, 2024 has caused F4SE and other native code mods to stop functioning, similar to the impact of Skyrim’s “Anniversary Edition”patch. The developer is currently working on an update, but there is no estimated timeline for its release or any potential technical issues that may prevent it.”

Despite the recent patch, numerous devoted Fallout 4 PC players are still dissatisfied as prevalent problems, including crashes with RTX-equipped graphics cards when weapon debris is enabled and crashes when the game runs above 60 FPS, persist. As a result, a Fallout 4 PC player has opted to revert the update in order to ensure compatibility with mods.

A mod titled “Steam- Revert Next-gen Update” was uploaded to NexusMods just hours after the release of the next-gen update. However, this mod does not involve modifying any game files. Instead, it provides a method for reverting a Steam installation of Fallout 4 back to the previous build.

The instructions, contained in a text file, direct Steam to download the previous version of the game and overwrite any changed folder paths from the recent update.

Despite being a temporary solution, diehard Fallout fans who have numerous mods installed will continue to use this fix. However, it will likely take a while for modders to update their fan-made content with the latest update, especially since the Fallout 4 Script Extender is currently unavailable.
